I only had an old camera to take to the show so most of my pictures were too blurred to post.
I put these here merely to whet your appetites for the proper photographers who are probably exhausted after the show.
It was a lovely day with a wonderful display in an excellent venue. Very good homemade cakes too.
Well done to everyone involved.
-
How did anybody carRy that Sedum into the show hall? It should have been dropping bits all over the place!
-
Good job, Vivien. Many thanks, Paddy
-
A picture of Mandy's mini-garden to start Vivien, she will be pleased.
A close up of the Farrer winner Primula allionii 'Crusader'
sorry I didn't catch the exhibitors name.
A good day was had in a splendid venue, congratulations to the organisation team again. Even through their 'trials & tribulations'.
-
As Vivien says there were a large number of plants on display. With all 4 rows of tables full.
The last couple of shows we've been to Saxifrage seemed to be dominant, but as the season changes, for me, the Primulas nudged in front this week. As displayed by the Farrer winner and the large number on the benches.
3 pan Primula distinct section.
But their was a great variety and something for all tastes (including the selection of home made cakes).
Foliage plants
Sempervivum and sedum
and cut flowers.
Not to mention mini-gardens

Wonderful plants and pics.
Am wondering if there is such a thing as a show where the winning plants get auctioned off after the event, it occurred to me nobody would want to win ???
No shows around here as you can most likely guess. :(
-
Thanks Vivien, Helen and Mick for your kind words about the East Lancashire Show and our 'new' venue (to which we have eagerly returned after twenty years).
The day proved a tremendous success for Carol Kellett and her magnificent team and, as you probably suspected, I have a host of images captured on the day that I will post when the aches and overwhelming tiredness have waned. Just one image at the moment of proud Farrer Medal winners; Mike and Christine Brown.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the show and our thanks to exhibitors, helpers, nurserymen, judges and organisers for their magnificent efforts on the day and, especially, last evening at a very traumatic setting up (of which more later).
-
Vivien and Mick, what a display of photos, terrific, thanks!
I hope I won't be casting a jinx on the upcoming shows, but it seems to me from what we have seen on the benches of the shows so far this year, that the displays are bigger and better than ever!
Goes to demonstrate how sturdy the show tables need to be, doesn't it? ;D
I must say that I do not know that Primula variety 'Crusader' ... what a super colour and a magnificent plant ..... but then again, it comes, I discover , from the Browns...... they are very fine growers, of course.

Helen, that crashing noise was the sound of hundreds of exhibitors fainting at the very notion!! :P ::) ;D
-
Just one more image tonight, Saxifraga 'Peach Melba' ... lovely colour, awful name ... off to bed to dream!

You do want us to put our precious plant babies on the benches??? The very idea of someone bidding for one of our plants [never mind Squirrel's, Fred Hunt's, The Taylors', the Bainbridges' and others I could name] makes my blood run cold! What would be the point of taking years and years and years to bring a plant to the point of perfection to have it win a first and see it auctioned off to some oink who hadn't got a clue how to keep it alive but had a long pocket?
-
I actually managed a "few" pictures today ::)
The walk to the lunch time pub was up hill through historic Whitworth's cobbled streets. Here Peter Farkasch striding out with Tony Lee getting there eventually.
-
A couple of general views of the show bench. Not only was this a good primula show, it was a good Primula Broadwell Milkmaid show. The first picture shows that this plant almost needs its own class as there were so many exhibits of it.
-
A ramdom selection of plants that caught my eye
Anemone caucasica
-
Pieris nana 'Redshank' (although usually exhibited under its old name Arcterica)
Rhododendron forrestii Tumescens Group - what a colour!

That's mine finished. I think Cliff might have one or two more up his sleeve when he's had a well earned night's rest. And thanks to all the East Lancs team for all their hard work.
-
What lovely plants.... particularly well done to Diane, who, as we know, spends most of her show days chatting... she's done us proud today! ;D I was a bit worried by her first photo..... thought all we were going to get was the road to the pub! :-\ Needn't have worried!
Mick and Mandy, you are getting into the swing of exhibiting now, many congratulations to you for taking the plunge and doing so well. The shows just wouldn't happen without the dear sould who haul themselves out of warm beds on chilly mornings to support the shows with their heavy loads of plants...... grateful thanks and well done to you all! 8) :-*
-
Many thanks Diane for your splendid images (she hasn't been well, folks - hope you are feeling better now, Mrs. C)?
After a reasonable night's sleep (nearly FOUR hours - and that is VERY reasonable sleep for me) I am ready to post another dollop of images for your delectation and recycle bins.
The day turned out warm and sunny after a frosty start and the crowds flocked to our lovely new venue at Whitworth Civic Hall. Over seventy exhibitors provided oodles of incredible plants and, from general feedback and early treasurer reports, the event proved a tremendous success.
Carol and her very merry band of helpers had endured a very tense Friday evening as all the tables booked for the event were stranded many miles away in Southport, wrongly allotted by the suppliers to the following weekend. After coercion they DID promise that they would arrive that evening, but as the minutes and hours passed we all had serious doubts. Has a show ever been staged on the floor of a hall - have judges had to crawl around on their hands and knees - would visitors accept the provision of binoculars as they entered the hall? But arrive they did - and to the credit of the East Lancs Group, more than enough helpers stayed to make the setting up a pleasure rather than a pain. Fortunately the days of staging plants on the evening prior to the show are long gone (in East Lancs anyway) or we could have had a host of exasperated exhibitors to placate.
Anyway, the show went ahead and proved a delight from start to finish ...

Lovely to see your pictures, Cliff, and glad that the show was the success it appeared to be. Hope that you have recovered from the trauma of Friday evening - that must have been dreadfull.
If I remember rightly (which I do not always do) the Callianthemum was your entry. I like the way it was displayed with the little rocks.
The top left entry in the East Lancs Special was Diane's. My close up of it did not come out :(
-
You are very observant, Vivien - I seldom remember my own name.
Cheers,
Eric
-
Thanks Vivien, Diane, Mick and Cliff (Oops, forgot Eric...) for the very comprehensive report full of brilliant pix of glorious plants !
What a great show it seems to have been.
Too bad East Lancs... is a bit too far off to make a "hop"..... :( and that it's on the same day as the Kent show which is within my "hop" reach... ;D
Good that we have the internet to enjoy the best of both worlds !!
-
What a display thanks to all for the great Show and all pictures that bring the show to us where ever we are.
In my case sat in the heat of Denver enjoying my last few days in the USA - back home on Tuesday.
-
Thanks to all who posted photos. It looked an excellent Show.
-
It was a brilliant day and my feet are still reminding me that I was on them for most of it. 70 exhibitors and about 700 plants, couldn't be better, a few days of sunshine had brought everything out. It was interesting that there were a lot of different plants from those at Blackpool the week before. Totally exhausting though especially since the table firm had it down for the following week. Though to give them their due they did load up and make to the show hall from Southport for 7pm. Several of the set-up team were eyeing a couple of sofa's in the foyer in case they were even later than that. Still despite everything Carol and her team had everything ready on time. As we say every Saturday morning from March to whenever 'IT'S SHOW TIME' (quotation from Jim Carrey in 'The Mask').
-
Super pictures from a great show. I like the shows. Thanks.
-
My sincere thanks to the skillful photographers for taking me to such
a beautiful show !

WOW!!! But you're right of course. It's at the big "expo" type things that the plants get sold off afterwards, so that the exhibitors don't have to take them all home; stuff propagated especially for the event; quick-growing and soon to be common as muck since such events are nothing but advertising for the hort industry and a showcase for what is about to hit the unsuspecting market in billions, propagated for 20 cents each and sold for $25.

An incredible display and I thank warmly the exhibitors and especially the photographers. The show "staff" who arrange it all are true heroes. Surely this must be one of the best ever show years in the UK?

Fritillaria x aff. pineticola
More images tomorrow ... the best are yet to come! ;D
-
Well thanks Cliff. You always come up trumps. The name is something of a conundrum though as pineticola is a synonym for bithynica so this is presumably a hybrid close to bithynica then? Mmmm. Whatever, a stunning colour.
-
Hi Lesley,
The relevant label in full - hope this helps?
-
Thank you all for showing us these beautiful displays on the full benches.
I enjoyed it very much.
Looking at those huge clay pots, Lancashire people must have stong backs!

Fantastic pics and plants Cliff, the Pulsatilla Vernalis was my favourite ( by half a nose) until I saw Viola spathulata.
If I ever got to go to one of these shows I think I'd be looking for my eyeballs on the floor!!
Hmmm but my jaw would prolly get in the way.
Congratulations to all involved.
-
Cliff,
Many thanks for posting all those photos from East Lancs - it makes me look forward to Hexham next week with a keen sense of anticipation. First entries are already in.
I must admit that the story of the tables fulfils my worst nightmare scenario (don't worry folks, I've double-checked and the tables will be there) as it's the one thing that's outside one's control as show secretary. I always now phone up to double check the details after doing it by chance a couple of years ago to find that, yes the tables were booked out as requested, but that they were about to be delivered to my house. :o The front lawn is just not that big!
Peter

Thanks Peter,
All those exhibits on your front lawn would have been bad enough, but what about the catering and the demands on your loo?
Three images I missed from my final two postings ...
Soldanella 'Sudden Spring'
Viola jooii
Primula Ellen Page

I thought your posting efforts deserved a special thank you Cliff !!

Three images I missed from my final two postings ...
Swoon!!!!
-
Thanks for the full label Cliff. One needs to assume all is not as it seems when looking at a seedlist. As a synonym of bithynica, I would have passed over that seed and missed out on something very special. Well I did anyway of course as I didn't join the Frit Group until this century.
