Dear Forumists,
Just a couple of odd things that caught my eye:
Androsace ochotensis
Arcterica nana (the comfort of woodiness (rather than towels))
Colchicum luteum
-
a few more:
Saxifraga 'Maria Callas'
RHS Wisley's Hepatica display
My fave Hepatica (no name)
I met the 'Channel Hopper' (!)
-
Wow, Giles, thanks for these.... a treat for us in the north to see what's happening "down there"!!
-
I met the 'Channel Hopper' (!)
and I bet he had spent a fortune on plants too ;D
-
Dear David,
I couldn't possibly comment, as I was somewhat 'preoccupied' myself....
-
Luc Gilgemyn and Luc the Lurker made the trip and they will return for the Kent Show in 3 weeks.
I will post a photo tomorrow of my pal's plant that he took to show the Wallises and ended up entering it in Section B. He got a first and the Geoff Smith Salver for the best bulbous plant in Section B & C. Hope I gave Ian some of the seed.
Found it too dark to take good photos in the Show Hall. Hope Kent will be better.
Agree with Giles that the Wisley Hepatica Display was excellent.
Edrom had some very nice Hepatica at very nice prices :o
-
Luc Gilgemyn and Luc the Lurker
Bless them! They sound like a modern beat combo, don't you think? We must come up with something better for Luc the Second, rather than Luc the Lurker..... maybe Luc the Second will suffice.... we must find if he harbours any royal pretensions... it sounds a kingly title... :D
-
He is as nice as the Luc we know and grows 1000 bulbs in a greenhouse and frames that have me green with envy.
He has a stall booked for the Mid-Anglia Bulb Sale in August. It will be nice to have a new source of bulbs.
-
mmm made a post earlier on, but it seems to have gone missing in cyber space...
I'm glad our first 'hop' of the season was a very good one ! We attended a splendid show and were able to greet some formumists, which is always a pleasure ! We met Giles, Paul Cumbleton, Art and his pal Dan :D, but we seem to have missed Tony G. and others perhaps... :'( )
Don't know about that modern beat combo Maggi .... ;D
But you might baptise my chum Luc (the lurker) into Luc BBD (Belgian Bulb Despot) as so many of us, he's a big fan of the Bulblog and it's author... ;D If only I could get him to post here... (he'll be cross when he reads this... :-X ) but who knows, one day you might get stuck with two Luc's here....
As to fortunes spent, David, I'm telling no secret that the exchange rate of £ is very clement to us 'continentals' at the moment... ;D alas, as Ian (pleione) Butterfield also had a sales table, all possible benifits from the exchange situation went up in smoke... :-\
Enough comments though - I made some pictures ... difficult circumstances though, so please excuse any imperfections... (as in the naming of plants :-\ )

Beautiful show Giles and Luc.
Wish I was as close to the Cannel harbour as you Luc.
Luc and Luc would be great companions for such trips!
-
Thanks Giles & Luc for posting the photos from the show.
-
Many thanks Luc. You must have had a great time. Seems you liked the little Juno hybrid? Me too. But where are the pics of our Forumists? ???
-
Luc - thanks for posting. HOW did we miss meeting? I was the only forumist wearing his SRGC sweatshirt!
I was also towing a slightly bored 11 year old around. It was going to be a whole family outing but Amy was ill and Jacinta had to stay behind to look after her. In the last minute re-organising I managed to leave my camera behind ... so no pics from me :(
-
Thanks for posting the pictures Luc, very enjoyable.
-
Thanks for the response everyone !
Diane, the Retic was really good but I'm afraid not as good as the picture - I had it somewhat underexposed.. :-\
Lesley - no pix of forumists... sorry... plants are the stars of the show ! ;D To be honest I didn't drag my camera along all day - I only took it out of the car to shoot some pix at the show - meetings with forumists were in the sales area (where else??? ;D I'll have to think about it next time !
Sorry to have missed you Tony... you are a brave man wearing the SRGC sweatshirt amongst all the green ones... ::)
Still it wasn't enough for me to run into you - maybe try a pot of Crocus in your buttonhole next time ??? And I didn't see an 11 year old being dragged along either... ;D

Galanthus XYZ looks like Primrose Warburg or Spindlestone Surprise
There was certainly a large potful of 'Primrose Warburg' :)
-
There was a curious result in the 1 pan iridacae class. It was won by a nice pan of Crocus labelled C vernus vernus. Lovely dark purple BUT I reckoned it was a tommy.
Julie - if you read this take a look at Whitwell Purple on the link below ;)

Maybe as common as muck but those pots of Cyclamen coum are truly outstanding, so many flowers per square inch. :D

What fun to enjoy this virtual visit to an English show, through the eyes of an Englishman and a Channel Hopper. Thanks, Giles and Luc.
Some very well grown plants to inspire and delight.
Luc, you have mis-spelled Dionysia 'Annielle' ( you missed an "n")
This lovely plant was named by Cyril Lafong for his wife Annielle and perhaps some may be interested to know a little of the history of the plant?
The form was raised in Germany by Michael Kammerlander from a cross between DD.curviflora and tapetodes, made in 1988, and plants, under the number MK8809/2 came to the UK in the 1990s. A plant grown on by Cyril was given the cultivar name 'Annielle' when the plant was awarded a PC in 1997.
Another seedling MK8809/1 had smaller, narrower petalled flower and that became 'Monika' but 'Annielle' is, to my eye, prettier with the larger, fuller flowers.
Cyril mentions the plant in his article in the latest issue of the Rock Garden No. 122, page 91 and the plant received a "write-up" in the AGS Bulletin Vol. 65 No.4 page 415, when it got its PC from Joint Rock in 1997.

I thought Dionysia 'Annielle' was a very poor plant. It has a HOLE in it. ;D ;D ;D

Probably poked by a judge..... :P
No holes in Cyril the Squirrel's version, I assure you! ;)
-
Perhaps someone poked this one with a pencil?
