Monksilver Nursery's "Spring Thing" is on March 14th 2009.
Time: 10 am - 4 pm
Venue: Monksilver Nursery
Venue details: Oakington Road, Cottenham, Cambridge
Borrowed from the gardeningwebsite.co.uk
Joe Sharman's Monksilver Nursery is the place to find some unusual spring plants. He invites specialist nurseries from around the country to bring their best and his plants will also be available. The event is held in a marquee to shelter the keen plantsmen who always brave the cold to come and there will be hot drinks available.
I'm not sure what year they refer to but Among the nurseries will be Bluebell from Derbyshire, Glen Chantry, Manor and Beeches from Essex, Phedar from Lancashire, Anita Thorp from Leicestershire and 39 Steps from Glamorgan – all gathered in one place so think how much petrol the buyer saves.

I once phoned someone in Bristol about buying a chinchilla. They said could I collect it. I said no. They then said how about meeting them halfway. So I said when could they come to Lancaster, as that was about halfway? We could meet you in Birmingham was the reply. Well that's 265 miles from Dunblane. Cambridge is 321 miles. No point in flying as of the weight restrictions in hand luggage.
-
Were you thinking of buying more than 20KG of plants> That's what bare rooting is for.
Couldnt you find a Chinchilla nearer home>
-
Don't think you'll find an airline that'll accept 20kg hand luggage? Try half that.
-
I thought average hand luggage allowance was 9kgs. It varies from 7kgs to 10kgs, I think ,.... I'm just worried about when the airlines go back to weighing all the passengers...... ::) :-[ :-\ :-X
-
Just shows what I know about carry on luggage. Anthony are you thinking of coming down?
-
Nope. Going nowhere this year.
-
You would enjoy down there especially the Galanthus Gala. At Spring Thing you'll find plants you maybe won't find in Scotland
-
Anyone going to Spring Thing?
-
Mark
Probably.

Just curious - has anyone ever had their hand luggage weighed? :-\ I haven't. 8)

Coming back from a winter study weekend in BC quite awhile back we bought all the missing back issues of the SRGC and AGS Journals from their inceptions. There was a weight limit for hand-helds and we tried to look non-chalant as we approached security despite the tonnage. They said nothing at the check-in but upon leaving a guard whispered that I was walking with a noticeable tilt. Wouldn't happen these days. Good reading for the 6.5 hours flight to the east coast.

So it's not just me then - coming back from Madeira in January my hand luggage was bursting at the seems with my purchased plants (and all the free cuttings and offsets that SRGC member Michael showered me with). I had to practice tossing my hand case around as if it didn't really weight 15lbs 15kgs! ;D (edit - got my lbs and kgs confused ::))
Concerning Monsilver - I may have a look and see if it can be done by train from London.

When we went to Europe on mountaineering holidays we had to practice the 'nonchalant' look and there was no way that we dare let the flight hostess help us put our hand luggage into the locker! I have heard it said that at one time mountaineers used to wrap their climbing ropes round their bodies and then pull a jersey over the top. I must admit to not having witnessed this myself.

Hand luggage is sometimes only 5kg (maybe on charter flights). Sometimes as much as 10kg, and some airlines take your hand luggage as part of your total 20 or 25kg.
And yes, we have quite frequently had hand luggage weighed - I think only in the last couple of years - since they upped all the regulations about only carrying one item on board. Prior to that, never weighed. I also stuff my pockets with a couple of heavy books - they never weigh you (thank goodness) ;D

Yes, and once, before the children were born, so that's over 12 years ago, I got into an argument with the girl behind the counter at Manchester airport (much to Vivienne's annoyance). >:( I was, the girl claimed, 1 kg over. I pointed out that the reading was 2 kg with nothing on it. She tried to claim that it still gives the true reading. She backed down as I wasn't for having it. I checked the bag on an empty aisle's scales and sure enough, 9 kg, which was 1 kg under!!! ::) Digital balances have a 'zero' button, which clearly the girl hadn't discovered or even realised the need for. I wonder how many passengers had to pay excess or rearrange their luggage?

Some weigh hand luggage but that is rare.
Some actually DO weigh you but I admit that it is very rare.
Why can you not put them in checked baggage ???
That is what I do.
Göte.
Travel is curious business.
I can fly to Paris, Glasgow, Barcelona you name it for less than I can take the train to south of Sweden.
However only if I book months in advance. I can be in Cambridge on the 14th at an air fare of less than 100£
BUT I would need to stay overnight at Stanstead on the 13th and somewhere else on the 14th. AND rent a car for two days. AND pay the Ryan air luggage fee.
Sigh.

That would then put the checked baggage above the airline's minuscule checked baggage allowance. I have, on one occasion, had to remove something from my checked baggage and put it in my (unweighed at that time) hand luggage. I remember coming back from Mombassa in August 1992. Our luggage had a zillion T-shirts and 3 ebony rhinos, numerous other ebony carvings and souvenirs etc in it. The guy at the baggage check-in grabbed our bags, gave a furtive glance towards the supervisor, and said "your bag too heavy, you give me two English pounds". No problem! ;D There was no check-in weighing machine, and we'd been queuing in what resembled a human cattle mart for and hour and a half and were glad to be rid of it.

In answer to Mark (and as a gentle reminder), yes we are going to the Spring Thing, visiting friends in Cambridge on that day who only live five miles away!
-
Yes I will be at Monksilver also, went last year for the first time and came away with some lovely plants, planning to get there early ;D
-
I'll be there too selling cyclamen. There will be a few new nurseries this year as a few from the west/northwest can't make it because of the recent crap weather.
