There is really only one snowdrop I want this season (it's not on the above list). You know the one Mark. ;)

Many nice snowdrops but what strikes me is that I received three bulbs of G. 'Diggory' in exchange for some of my own bulbs last year and how generous a trade it was.

There is a lot of sense in purchasing a few good snowdrops and then exchanging with another enthusiast after a few years.

While there are some desirable snowdrops on the Colesbourne list that I do not have, the one on this year's hit list isn't.

Shouldn't have to dream too long, Anthony, snow is all around us and heading your way... why not enjoy the real thing?? :P ::)

Sorry Anthony,

I can't help you with that one.  When reading your previous post I hoped that I could fulfill your wish... but, alas, I cannot.  :-[

Sorry.

No worries. As for EBay ... that will be excellent sport of the spectator kind in due course. ;D

While there is chat about 'Floccon' I'm happy that mine is now poking above soil level. I'm always worried that the dreaded fly will get the specials. Next year, following expert advice, all my bulbs will be dosed with Provado

Who's asking you for showdrops Mark? Not me. :-\ Mind you, I have been known to buy snowdrops for other people on request, when they are not in a position to do so themselves.

No not you or anyone else on the forum. I get many emails from Europe especially Germany and Holland. If I think I can help I always forward requests. Those that ask for rarest of the rare I delete the email

...however, you did say that someone will have 'Flocon de Neige' flowering size bulbs in their catalogue soon, so you know something I don't but would like to know more about.

I heard a whisper today the 'Flocon' will appear on one of the lists that will come out later this month. The price will be c£50 for a flowering bulb.

So it's all chinese whispers as far as I can see.... why not apply for all the snowie lists and see what's offered?
Title: Re: Colesbourne list
Post by: mark smyth on December 02, 2008, 10:27:36 PM
Yes apply to everyone. I'm sure mailing lists are big but a few extra shouldnt be a problem. Once you place an order the list should come every year.

Brian,

Doesn't Joe's list get published around the end of January? I'm sure Joe is the most likely candidate but Mark mentioned by the end of the month. Apart from North Green, are there any other 'biggies' left who may have this for sale?

David

Yes I think it does David, so it's thinking caps back on :-\  North Green normally comes out in January too I seem to remember (somebody will put me right I am sure).

27th December for North Green's list last year.  ;D

I didn't send for North Green's list and think it is immoral the way he puts snowdrops up for blind auction. In a real auction the cost you pay would be next increment from the next highest bidder. I would be interested to see the prices actually paid for each of, say, five of one kind offered this way. Can't imagine he'll have it on his normal list? As for Chinese whispers: they have to start somewhere.

Anthony you really should venture south some year to see what is available at the Galanthus Gala. I just looked at airfares for Edinburgh to Stansted. It's £52 return but would have been under £40 a few weeks back.

I must say I found the Colesbourne list interesting and, though the Bulb Despot's cry of "I wouldn't buy a snowdrop" was ringing in my ears.... I may have requested a couple of snowies.... I only say may.... please note :-\... on the grounds I might incriminate myself. :-[ :-X    ( little fat ones, that's as much as I'm saying!!)

i have heard of north green snowdrops before, but i have no information on them
do they offer mail order?

rob

North Green do mail order only, no visitors. Address: North Green Snowdrops, North Green Only, Stoven, Beccles NR34 8DG. You need to send £2 for the catalogue (and £2 every year if you want a catalogue every year - there's a space for catalogue cost on their order form, so you pay for next year's catalogue with this year's order. I make no comment.)

Yes, 'Dickerchen' is a real beauty, Hagen. I admired it on your website too. Is it a pure nivalis form or a hybrid? And does it open its petals up higher than in your website picture, or do they always stay hanging down slightly?

Me neither Martin. Needless to say I didn't send for a catalogue. I'm beginning to tire of receiving bulbs which are over and may or may not flower in a year's time. There'll be a good choice at the Bulb Display and who knows, there may even be a few that tempt me? Tonight I went to a talk by David Millward on bulbs. Fantastic. I must get Lilium regale. Perhaps John Amand will have it? Oh, and I like Dickerchen for its fuller figure.

I keep saying that too. I used to grow a lot of Lilium regale, and other trumpet lilies. The scent of regale is superb.

It strikes me, as a non-galanthoholic, that there's a certain amount of 'gouging' going on in the snowdrop industry.  For example, several of the varieties listed by at least one of the suppliers mentioned here appear to be available elsewhere at substantially lower prices.  Surely nowadays all commercial suppliers should at least put current catalogues on their website as a downloadable pdf, not least for ecological reasons.  As customers we are in a position to demand this rather than put up with petty exploitation and waste.

Grrrr!  >:(
