Title: Crocuses in Pelopones - November-2008
Post by: Janis Ruksans on November 30, 2008, 11:37:22 AM
As I wrote earlier in "Crocuses in November" I went to Greece to see some Autumn Crocuses blooming in wild. There was nice very cheap offer of tickets by KLM saving half of costs both on tickets and car rent. Although flight hours was not nice at all, but savings compensated discomfort of night hours in airport. The first impression was that I came too early - so dry was all around and no blooms at all but only poor Cyclamen. But later turned that earlier would be better as in some places we were too late - found last flowers only. Some of beauties you can see on attached pictures.

Hello Janis. Nice to see you and your photos on the forum. It would be good to see some more photographs from the nursery during the winter and spring, especially for those of us who will never have the chance to visit it (I keep saying I must visit my Latvian publisher, Egmont Latvia, so that I have an excuse to come to your nursery in spring, but will I ever find the time to do it?   :(  )

Janis
I would like to add my warm welcome to you on joining us here on the forum.
I am glad that your trip to Greece was fruitful and that you have shared some of the pictures with us.
I do like the conference of botanists  :) as well as the beautiful crocus species.

A welcome from me Janis, in the other Crocus thread, but added here too. How I wish it was easier (or possible at all) for us in New Zealand to import bulbs from your amazing lists - or that you had a seed list too. You probably don't want to hear the begging tone of my voice or to see the tears pouring down my cheeks. :'(

What a superb form of Crocus niveus, so much finer than our current "lilac" forms.

It is always a special pleasure to see crocus growing in the wild.
I agree with Luc this C. biflorus melantherus is great - it has wunderful outside markings. :o 8)
