Habenaria radiata is of easy culture here in eastern North America: it seems to respond well to our hot summers and properly positioned is hardy outside. However, the plants are so small that they are easily overwhelmed by more robust plants; furthermore, it is easy to lose track of them outside.

I grow it in full sun in pots of acidic peaty sand kept continually moist. Here in USDA zone 7  Montgomery County, Maryland, USA  it typically blooms in August.

I've attached two images: one of the flower, another of the underground parts of freshly dug plants (photographed against a grid of five lines to the inch).

Hi Bio,
For Ponerorchis graminifolia (=Orchis graminiflora) see my Wisley log no. 16 for 2006 on 31 July (http://www.srgc.org.uk/wisley/2008/010808/log.html)

Thank you Maggi, Jim & Paul !

Paul, do you think this plant could be tried outside ?
As you told about the medium, what do you finally prefer ?

Not sure how hardy they may prove - where do you garden? If winters are not too severe they may be OK in a sheltered spot but I think it would be quite a risk to be honest.

I still haven't decided on a good compost - I talked to another grower who siad they do fine for him in a normal alpine compost by which he meant loam and grit. I am going to try this this coming year as I'm not happy really with the mix so far

Hi all

Wondering what experience others have had growing these miniature beauties ?
Tubers of these have only recently started to become available.
A few years ago ,following reading an article in the "Pleione Review" I managed to purchase a few tubers.
I then planted these in a similar compost to the one  mentioned, which consisted off - two parts finely beaten Seramis, one part fine perlite and one part dark, loose humus.
Although a couple of these did flower they did not grow well and were soon lost.
This weekend I noticed at the Peterborough orchid show, a Japanese nursery selling nice looking plants growing in 100% Sphagnum moss ,which is far removed from the compost I had tried. ???
I purchased some to try ,but would be most interested to hear of others experience with these.

Hello Eric

I grow Ponerorchis in
2 part seramis
2 part kanuma
1 part sphagnum
In dormant period they grow them cold (5 C)
Growing season they grow warm

Frans - Many thanks for details of your compost mixture.

I wonder ,what is kanuma ?

I guess this is possibly a similar mixture to that which I tried without  success before, perhaps the tubers were of poor quality.

I wondered the very samething! I found this : http://www.dallasbonsai.com/store/kanuma.html   .... where I read " This particular material comes from the Kanuma Area of Japan which is basically the center of Azalea Bonsai Growing. Again, you must understand as with Akadama, that this is the stuff that the Japanese have out in their back yards........it's their "dirt." This material is dug out from 10 feet down, allowed to dry, crushed and then sorted as to grain sizes. It is more acidic than Akadama, and therefore, used mainly for Azaleas, Camellias, Gardenias and other acid loving Bonsai."

There are photos of the kanuma, also.

Nice Ponerorchis, Sam, how do you overwinter them? do you take them out of the water?

Ponerorchis graminifolia is a small, some would say miniature, variable terrestrial species. The species itself is rather a dull plant, so the plants we commonly see are cultivars, which as a group are commonly  called "Uchouran".
They are not regarded as hardy with a recommended winter minimum of 5C during dormancy, however, my tubers did fine on the floor in an unheated greenhouse, under the bench, in zone 8b.
They are best kept out of direct sunlight, watering as the medium dries.

I inadvertantly left a tray of ponerorchis outside for the whole of the 2008/9 winter (minus 8 several times) and they all regrew and flowered.

I've got about a dozen different clones which I just forget about all winter, bone dry under the bench, down to -3 or -4.  They are just coming through and will flower in June July, when most of my hardies are finished.  As to their hardiness outside I have my doubts, wet and cold like this winter probably equals mushy corpses!

Thanks. An ad by Van Meuen caught my eye. "fully hardy" they say.

Given that I've spent the day cutting back dead hebes and ceanothus which have been in the garden for fifteen years but couldn't hack this winter, and have lost dahlias and gladioli which have been in the ground for the past ten years without ever needing lifting, I very much doubt that, but they are quite cheap, so you can always suck it and see.  I'd never have believed that you would have done so well with pleiones outside, until this year that is.

I almost got flowers last year, but they blasted at the last moment. I kept mine in the fridge (as advised) and have just repotted, but if anyone has any tips at all (I hope that Mark does not mind).......

Mine are just starting to grow now. They've spent the winter bone dry in a pot in the unheated greenhouse,
so they can certainly take several degrees of frost.
They grow pretty well in pleione style bark/perlite/moss compost in a clay pot.
Last year they doubled the number of stems.
This will be their third year in it, so maybe I should repot them,
David

I only grow a couple of clones but I find it useful to water from beneath in a tray as I have had problems with them rotting at the neck if I water from above. I'm sure I've seen this advice elsewhere also. Otherwise culture is the same as above -  if cold and dry in winter they are quite hardy.

That said - when I bought some from Laneside at a show in 2009 they told me that plants had been accidentally left out in the rain and cold all the previous winter, in their pots, and losses were nil.

Time to re-pot my Ponerorchis as they've died back now after a nice successful year, only to find that two of the tubers have split giving me a nice surprise i can say..
