Me too. Only problem from my point of view is that, because Ron's catalogues went out so early this year, I missed the chance to have some slips put in with them, telling his customers about my novel, The Snowdrop Garden, that's being published next February.
I should have contacted Ron sooner. :( He was happy to do it but by the time I talked to him he'd already put all the catalogues into envelopes, so now I'll have to wait till next year. At least Joe's said I can do something at the gala in February, so there's that.
Shame though. It's my first novel and it's all about snowdrop growing and the world of snowdrop collecting, so I'm sure at least a few of Ron's customers might have been interested. No real budget for advertising the novel, so this kind of word of mouth stuff and flier in catalogues stuff is my best way to get the word out about it. I need to plan things better. Always too busy writing though.

darn, i didnt realise the catalogue was issued so early this year, i thought the earliest to send a SAE was just after christmas?
is it to late to order a catalogue now?
i have forgotten the address of the snowdrop company so if anyone has it please pm me thanks! (thats if its not to late)
rob
Not too late. Ron still has plenty of catalogues to send out to people who apply for them. You'll need to send a stamped addressed A5 size envelope to:
The Snowdrop Company
Barn Cottage
Shilton
Oxfordshire OX18 4AB
-
Rob if you order this year you will automatically be sent a catalogue next year from Ron Mackenzie (The Snowdrop Company).

Hi Rob
it is indeed early arriving this year. The 2007 catalogue arrived with me 03/01/2007. The 2008 catalogue arrived with me on 28/12/2007. And now the 2009 catalogue has arrived over a month earlier on 21/11/2008.
There are some lovely snowdrops listed in it - but alas I must resist buying any this year :( - A shame as there are 4 I would love to own. C'est la vie.

Nice range of snowdrops here for those who have not seen this nursery before.

-
...and they send out very good plants too Rob. ;D
-
Highly recomended by me too. Last year when they didn't have a flowering sized bulb they sent me three bulbs instead ;D
They do sell out of some varieties quite early (and the paper catalogue has been out for months).
regards
John
-
I would think there has already been a big rush for Ron's new releases
-
What are you after Rob?
regards
John
-
Rob,
Colin Mason (Fieldgate Snowdrops) sells these varieties and he may well have them available at the Gala in February. He certainly had them for sale at this year's Gala and were also on his summer listing for 2009.
Godfrey Owen priced at £35
South Hayes priced at £24

i just got a reply from coling, but dissapointingly he dosent do mail order :(
id be happy to by small non flowering sized bulbs of these too as well, even tiny recentley chipped (at least one cycle in soil though)
rob
Rob - I think that David was probably telling you about Colin Mason now so that you could pre-order your snowdrops and collect them from Colin at the Galanthus Gala in February.
-
Rob,
You may want to send Coin Mason a letter requesting to be added to his preliminary listing for next year's list. I know that we haven't had this season yet but you have to be on the ball if you want to stand a chance of picking up some of the 'specials'. I sent Colin a letter in March and received the list in June this year.
Chris was correct in his assumption that I was suggesting that you try and secure bulbs for collection at the Gala in February. Unfortunately for you Colin doesn't do mail order and so either you can pick up from him directly or at the Gala.

Rob why dont you go to events in Essex?
-
RHS afternoon at Glen Chantry and Angelsey Abbey (Suffolk maybe)
-
which ones are in essex mark? i know of the jan RHS but not much at that.

David Quinton posted details about the RHS event at Glen Chantry, which is in February 2009, on the 'Galanthus Events in 2009' thread on 27th October (Reply #12). click the link......

does the snowdrop company send out bulbs with flower? or just flowering size bulbs?
Time will tell.
-
Rob, I've had bulbs from Ron Mackenzie with flowers on and some without. It depends when they're sent out and how early/late the season is. I suspect it's possible that with the early season we're getting this year, they may arrive quite early.
'Ronald Mackenzie' is, I believe, a yellow-marked form of gracilis (or a hybrid therefrom) and definitely not the same as 'Ecusson d'Or'. The description in Ron Mackenzie's catalogue is incorrect, which may be misleading you. 'Ronald Mackenzie' has yellow markings at the top and base of the inner petals, not the outer petals as stated in the catalogue. This was obviously a slip by Ron when preparing the catalogue.
Ron, when I spoke to him recently, seemed very pleased with and full of praise for the new double 'Lady Fairhaven' so I'd say it must be good.

There is a photo and a brief write up of G. 'Ronald Mackenzie' in the 2004/5 edition of the RHS Daffodils, Snowdrops & Tulips Yearbook.
I first saw G. 'Lady Fairhaven' at the Galanthus Gala in 2006, when a single bulb was offered in the Auction, and was impressed by it then - I saw it again in full flower earlier this year and noted it as a 'big tight double', altogether a superb snowdrop.

Harvey's plantlist has just arrived by email...some wonderful prices :o

How does one get hold of a copy of the RHS Daffodils, Snowdrops and Tulips Year Book please. I am a member of RHS.

Although tried that link myself just now and it didn't bring be back to where I was - if you understand what it is I am trying to say.
It does bring you to the Wisley shop and if you do a search on the top of the page for the "RHS Daffodils With Snowdrops And Tulips 2008 - 9" you should get to it.
This might be better:

How strange, Paddy... the first time I tried the link it brought me a page with the relevant Yearbook included but when I tried two more times I got another page! Interestingly, when I went to the RHS site earlier , I could only bring up details about the 2007-8 Yearbook, the search engine said it could find nothing for the 2008-9 version! I guess ALL search engines are a bit temperamental :P
Try THIS link: http://shop.wisley.co.uk/products.php?product=ALPINES_AND_BULBS&sel_page=1
Chris' chap is the cheaper bet, though, just as he said.... but, as Paddy points out elsewhere, it is possible to buy with credit cards from the RHS direct bookshop, which is very handy for overseas folks.
-
But, Maggi, for those of us living in Euroland the bother of getting such a small amount of sterling is just too much of a bother and a credit card payment over the internet is so much more convenient.
And, yes the internet ULRs are a puzzle, not even copying and pasting accurately.
Paddy
-
Yes, Paddy, I take your point about the ease of purchasing with RHS shop... have edited my post above.
Though I could buy the book and you could send the chocolate!! ;) ;D
-
Can I not just buy the book and the chocolate for myself?
Paddy
-
I see what you were asking, Rob. Yes, Ron Mackenzie generally does send out bulbs which have flowered or are flowering, so are definitely flowering size; though I expect there will be some exceptions, say if a bulb has reached a good enough size to send as flowering size but hasn't produced a scape that year. Generally, I've always found his bulbs to be a good size.
As I said in an earlier post, 'Ronald Mackenzie' has yellow markings at top and base of the inner segments. It has no markings at all on the outer segments. The description in the catalogue of yellow markings on the outers is a mistake.

I don't know what it is with you Folks..... if it were up to you I'd have the figure of a whippet! :o
