Title: A piece of Amazonia.
Post by: Michael on September 18, 2008, 09:28:56 PM
Hello again :D

I would like to show you my giant waterlilies. This was my first attempt to grow them, and i succeeded!
I would like to say my thanks to Alberto Grossi who gave me a little help in getting the seeds.

Yes, these huge plants were a pea sized seed 7 months ago!! :D
I wish i could grow them bigger, but they really take a lot of space, and the watertank doesnt allow me

to get them any bigger!

This is Victoria waterlily:

It had bloomed twice, but it's a night blooming plant, and i unfortunately do not have flash in my camera to take a decent picture. The flower only lasts for 2 nights, on the forst night it's pure white and scented, on the second, its reddish-pink and scentless.

This one with purple on the underside of the leaf is Euryale ferox, the gorgon plant. And it is very feroucious, i have hurt myself a couple of times on those sharp spines like blades. Even the top of the leaves have spines!

WOW! Really super! I would never have thought so much growth was possible in that short time...How exciting is that!  8) The engineering of the leaf structure is  great... it looks even better on the purple/red one!

Fantastic. I think I would have to grow them on their side too. ;)
