The Show Secretaries for this joint AGS/SRGC Show, Mike and Pearl Dale, have had the misfortune to have been flooded very badly in the last week......accordingly, alternative arrangements have been made to receive Entries for the Show: You may now make your entries to Alan Newton, either by post to 12 Main Street, Ponteland NE20 9NR, by Telephone to 01661 871974 or via Email at alan.alpine@btinternet.com
I believe that emails sent to Pearl&Mike.Dale@agsgroups.org will be re-directed, but perhaps the best idea is to contact Alan Newton direct.
Please pass this info to anyone you know who may be likely to enter the show.
Sincere sympathies to Pearl and Mike, who face a long and unpleasant task in restoring their home and property to good order again. :-*

Just a few pictures I took at the show today.
First, an arrangement that looked lovely, with gentians and clematis, a perfect table centrepiece.
Next, Brian Smethurst showing off his wonderful Sax. fort. 'Early Ruby'
Best in show - Cyclamen rohlfsianum shown by the Wallis's (No Farrer awarded this year)
Eriogonum holmgrevii (Please excuse any misspelling, its hard to read the writing) along with detail of the plant
-
Just a few more...
Empodium flexile, a plant I had not encountered before
Gentiana 'Amethyst'
Gentiana 'Blue Silk'
Hyacinthoides ligulata - heavenly scented
Sorry I couldn't take more, too many people to talk to, too little time.... but I did manage to find a few plants to buy ::)

Many thanks for posting your lovely images, Chris.

Time you were in bed Maggie, yes both well. Ponteland show was a splendid one, far more colour than any of us had expected, a v interesting mix of plants, some surprising ones in good form. There should have been a Farrer for the cyclamen rolfsianum but such is life

I'm glad someone took pictures - I took my camera but never had the chance to get it out of my bag. I know some other local group members took pictures, I'll ask at our meeting this evening whether one or two couldn't make their way to the forum.

Pardon my ignorance but was the Farrer medal not given due to lack of good plants? :o :o :o
I thik that there were some nice cyclamen there that would do well but I am far from being a judge, but still judging what I see.
Thanks for the great photos and the time travel into 2009 ::)
Kind regards
Joakim

The standard the judges try to keep up requires plants to be exceptionally well grown and flowered to win the Farrer or the Forrest medal. On this occasion I did comment before judging started that I didn't think a Farrer would be awarded (sits back feeling smug 8)). The Cyclamen in question was very good but not as good as a number seen in recent years and was not, indeed, as good as one at Loughborough the previous week which did not win, being beaten by an excellent pot of Crocus. I'll post a picture shortly to let you make up your own minds. I think the marking on the flowers was probably the deciding factor

Here's the picture, a close up of the Cyclamen flowers with what looks like weather damage.

Now that I've got the bit between my teeth here are a few more pictures of the Newcastle Show. No apologies for some repetition, you can't see enough of good plants.
A fungus spotted on the grass verge outside the hall while the judges were doing their thing.
A close up of Hyacinthoides lingulata (now I might have given a Farrer to this one)
Crocus pulchellus
A wonderfully coloured form of Cyclamen hederifolium
Bessera elegans
-
Another small batch
Rosularia sempervivum glaucophylla
Cyclamen africanum
Gentiana Lucerna (not my cup of tea, a double Gentian, but you may like it)
Another picture of the very fine Gentiana sino-ornata which won the best Gentian trophy
and finally...........this week's caption competition
-
"Well I'll have the Roast Duck on Crocus Mash."

and finally...........this week's caption competition
"We two kings of orient are...."

"We are missing the ruddy guitar festival at Ullapool"!!!

Thanks for the pictures folks !!! 8)
Great coverage of another wonderful show !

Martin R Thanks for the detail of the cyclamen. I now understand why it did not get the Farrer.
Also thanks for the other pictures.
Kind regards
Joakim
