Title: Special Alpine Event in the Netherlands 2008

The Dutch Alpine Garden Society (NRV) organises a large autumn plant sale at Fort Hoofddijk (Utrecht Botanic Gardens) on Saturday 23rd of August. Many nurseries and plant specialists from the Netherlands and Belgium will offer a wide selection of choice plants. There is always much on offer, not just very rare and unusual plants but also many old favourites.

This is also an excellent opportunity to visit the famous alpine garden at Fort Hoofddijk, certainly one of the best of its kind in Europe. There is also an excellent peat garden and probably the finest examples of alpine gardens built from recycled materials in the world.

This year the autumn plant sale of the Dutch AGS will be on the same day as the first day of the "Rare Alpine and Plant Weekend", which will be held at Ploeger Nurseries, not far from Fort Hoofddijk. Potterton’s Nursery, Jakob Eschmann and Lamberton Nurseries will offer a wide selection of unusual plants at Ploeger Nurseries. Ploeger Nurseries is situated just a few kilometres from Fort Hoofddijk so both locations can be easily visited on the same day. The address of Ploeger Nurseries is:

I can only fully agree with you Luc! The best in the Low Lands ;D
Best plants for fair prices and nice people too.
I know them since before they started their nursery and they always became better!

I do find it amusing that the Portier nursery, while in Belgium, has a website in Dutch.........of course, it is all Greek to me.... ::)

I'm sure you know Belgium has two main languages - our Prime minister has (once more) just offered his resignation because of linguistic quarrels, but I don't want to venture into politics... ::)

1) In Flanders we speak Flemish, which is basically the same as Dutch
2) In the Walloon provinces (and Brussels) we speak French.

There's even another region in the East of Belgium where German is the native tongue.

The Portier nurserie, located near Bruges, is in the Flemish speaking part of the country, so their site is in Dutch. ;D

PS : I'm sure there's an important greek comunity in Brussels that does speak Greek.... ;D You of all people should know that.... think of the famous Leonidas and Daskalides "pralines".... excellent Belgian chocolates, originally made by Greeks.... ;D

Post by: Giles on September 05, 2008, 11:06:40 AM: I wasn't able to go to this event, but spotted Magnar's recommendation of De Reuvenkamp Nursery, above.
I had a look at the website and ordered some plants by post which arrived today.
Really good plants, some not available here, and not very expensive either.
