Title: query : Thalictrum??
Post by: Maggi Young on June 23, 2008, 09:13:01 PM
Hello, Folks,
a message received from Nancy Scherer.........
"Hello!

I recently bought a plant from a nursery here in the US that was
labeled Thalictrum fendleri. The nursery owner said that she got the
seed from your organization. When I Googled on the plant's name and
looked at the photos, they were all of a different plant. Would it be
possible to email you a photo of the plant I bought and see if anyone
there can identify it? I just want to know its real name and its
requirements, not to return it or complain about it!

 Thank you so much!
 Best regards,
 Nancy Scherer  "

Here is the plant in question.....

I have to say, on first look, it doesn't seem to me to BE a thalictrum!  ::) :-\ :-X
Suggestions, Friends, please.

T. lucidum (http://www.funet.fi/pub/sci/bio/life/plants/magnoliophyta/magnoliophytina/magnoliopsida/ranunculaceae/thalictrum/lucidum-1b.jpg) or relative?

I don't think it is a Thalictrum. Wrong sort of foliage.

Arisaema, yes, I suppose T. lucidum or angustifolium ( if those are not synonymous!)
I have just received this note from Nancy .......

"Hello Maggie and Ian,

The best plant nerd I know here in Minnesota, Henry Fieldseth,
suggested  Thalictrum cooleyi
(  http://www.forestryimages.org/browse/detail.cfm?imgnum=1241357 ) which
is perhaps not quite it, but at least shows that a Thalictrum can have
foliage like my mystery plant has!

Thanks again! I will keep checking your forum in case someone can
identify the plant for sure. Maybe the person who provided the seed in
the first place.

Nancy"

Just been checking up on these three and it seems that it almost certainly one of them!! We have never grown a thalictrum with this sort of leave, only the kind with the rounded, gingko/aquilegia type foliage!

Hello,

I have one from Russian seed that looks identical to that plant. I was hoping for flowers again this year, but no luck. Last year they were white, but I was not identifying Thalictrum last year. If I get a minute tomorrow I'll run by the library to check the Flora of the U.S.S.R.

Mixed with "normal" flowers of T.aquilegifolium are yellow flowers of T.lucidum. The plant's foliage is invisible here, but it is is absolutely the same as in the photo shown in the first post.
