Title: Yesterday in a gardencenter...
Post by: ruweiss on November 26, 2023, 08:39:22 PM
Terrible- saw these poor plants in a gardencenter nearby.
Waxed Hippeastrum in Christmas sweaters, various designs,
red, white and pink flowers - need no watering.

Poor bulbs! Why do they do this to them? Crazy - like dying flowers mad colours.

Rudi and Maggi,

My wife’s first reaction to this garden center post was something along the lines of “Was häßlichster Kitsch!”  I do not know or speak German, but I think she meant it is the worst fate to have befallen those bulbs.

My wife thinks there was some lament by Seneca that went along the lines of “Where is the lake, the sea, the forest, the spot of land that is not ransacked to gratify our palate”.  Clearly, nothing is cherished, and this is what someone does for money.

Here in America, there is a saying, “ A fool and his money are soon parted”.  I think we would have been less surprised if we had seen those things over here.

I cannot but agree with Jasmin´s reaction, having received a waxed bulb like this last year from a visitor. At least it bore no sweater... Though I felt almost furious considering the way living plants are dealt with by cunning businessmen, not to speak of the lack of empathy in people buying stuff like this.

"What an ugly kitch"- I fully agree with Yasmin and the other friends. It is a shame, how
business has no respect with nature, a fact, that we cannot change.
