Title: Iris Paradoxa Forma Choschab hardy in central Europe?
Post by: Sempervivum on August 11, 2023, 05:39:35 PM
Dear rock gardeners,
today I found Iris Paradoxa Forma Choschab. A very unusual flower and I would like to grow it. However I read about it's origin: Turkey, Kaukasus, North Iran. Therefore I suspect that it's not hardy in central Europe, northern Germany.
Can this be confirmed?
Best regards, Ulrich

Freezing temperatures will not harm it. To little light and too much water in winter and too much water during it's summer rest will kill it! So full sun, very very good drainage is a must. Better with some rain protection in winter and summer....

We found this beauty many years ago at Güzelsu/Van Region/Eastern Turkey near the Hosap castle (Donor of the subspecies name), a real impressive sight. It is a member of the Oncocyclus group and not the easiest of them.

Many thanks for this info, it helps a lot.
If it's not the easiest one and needs special care I won't buy it.
Fortunately I found a similar hybrid on irisloictasquier.com: Iris Acoustique. I will give this one a try.
Best regards, Ulrich
