Got a couple of ID questions from friends that I thought you folks could help with!
first one : " A friend has a shrub with this leaf on it, there are 5 or so joined into a palmate shape, and she thinks she has seen one at Cruickshank Bot Garden. She also thinks there are tassels on it. Thanks. Helen."

And this one : " A Canadian friend has asked if anyone can ID this, from the leaf ranunculaceae, but is it an anemone?"

Hi Maggi,
Not much to go on, but the first one makes me think Berberis. Maybe B. julianae? Would need more photos to confirm though.
I agree that the second is Anemone. Maybe a double A. sylvestris?

Hard to tell when we don't know the scale - thought it might be a bit small for that?
-
My first thought for the leaf was also berberis - but which one?
Could the flower be Ranunculus aconitifolius Flore Pleno?
-
I'm pretty sure it's not Ranunculus aconitifolius Carolyn. I don't grow the double form but the single form is a robust clump-forming plant (think Astrantia major), with sprays of small flowers about the size of a buttercup (tried to post an image of mine but the forum won't let me for some reason).
The plant in the photo looks as if it is creeping. Maggi, I agree with you it looks a bit on the small side for Anemone sylvestris, but couldn't think of anything else in that vein - is there a N American equivalent?

Thanks to a fellow SRGC member in Aberdeen who says she " believes it is Eriobotrya japonica, the loquat or Japanese Tea shrub."

For leaf no 1, I join Tristan's option for Berberis julianae.
The photo shows Eriobotrya japonica taken as a seedling holiday souvenir from Madeira in 2006. Not really a shrub, is it? I pruned one leaf, put on display with scissor and knife for size comparisment. Both photo's taken this afternoon.

Thanks for the Eriobotrya photos, Wim - makes things quite clear!
