Post by: Hans J on October 05, 2020, 10:38:56 AM
Hi all ,

who can help with ID this Dioscorea ?
I have received this plant in last year as Dioscorea communis .....but I believe it is wrong named
When I look in the internet it looks different from my plant
My plant has never flowers ....but now a lot of this tuber ...
Could it maybe  Dioscorea bulbifera ?
I know from my walkings plants of Dioscorea communis ( it is  growing here wild ) they had red berries

Thanks for any ideas
Hans 😎

Hans, I believe your guess that it is Dioscorea bulbifera, is correct. Online searches don't reveal any other members of the genus that produce aerial bulbils.

Hi Gordon ,

Thanks for your answer
I have in meantime ask friends ...they told me it could also be D.batatas ...they make also such aerial bulbils
( and it is much more common in commerce )
The main difference is :
D.batatas is hardy ...D.bulbifera not
In any case - it is not D.communis !
