Title: What is this bulb?
Post by: Knud on July 13, 2020, 07:19:42 PM
I sowed this bulb many years ago, label long gone, bloomed first time last year, and even more this year. The first picture shows the flower, the second more the growth habit, at least of a group in a pot.

Any guesses? Thank you.

Asparagaceae, maybe Anthericum liliago?

Anthericum ramosum?

Thank you all. I just cannot recall having sown Anthericum, but that does not mean I haven't. When it bloomed I first thought it was a Paradisea liliastrum, but no. It must have been the 'liliago' that led me there...And now that I knew where to look I found a reference indicating a difference between liliago and ramosum is that the style of liliago is bent, of ramosum straight. This one is definitely bent, so Anthericum liliago it is, I think.

Thanks again!

It's a lovely plant Knud.  I hope it settles down in your garden & enjoys life there in western Norway.

Hi Knud, ramosum also has a branched inflorescence (hence the name)  which gives it a much aireir appearance - so I agree, it's liliago.

Yes, I agree with Tristan, now that I have looked closely at the stems! Also the seed heads look like the liliago seed heads. Ramosum has smaller, rounded seed heads.

Thank you, Ashley. Yes it is a lovely plant, and they have been quite happy in the well drained mix I put in that pot. I just have to find a good spot in the garden, our winters can be very wet. Luckily there are enough plants in the pot so I can try a couple of places.

Thank you also, Tristan and Carolyn, good to have the species confirmed. I just checked, no branching, and the fruit is definitely pointy.

Just for the record, and since Rich posted those nice photos of Anthericum ramosum, here is a stalk of my A. liliago, no branching and pointy fruits. Thank you to all again.

Excellent, all! It  is  these  "records"  which make the  forum such a  useful resource.

There should be lots of seeds for experiments around the garden 8)

Yes, definitely, and there are several stalks like the one pictured, so it will be a good harvest.

oh Yvain, I just stumbled upon this post! it's beautiful, I love it: you took it home?
this is really the kind of thing I fall for, these wild plants that make tiny double flowers!

I think that I remembered you (and your double Ranunculus) when I took it because, usualy, I hate the double form  ;D
