Hi,
can someone tell me the difference between:
Leontopodium nivale subsp. alpinum
Leontopodium nivale subsp. nivale
and:
Leontopodium palibinianum?

The AGS Encyclopaedia says "It is a taxonomically difficult genus with most of the species very similar to each other and often listed under invalid or incorrect names".  But the species descriptions do offer some distinctions.

L. alpinum - Clump to almost mat-forming, to about 20cm or more in height. Leaves linear to oblong lanceolate, to 4cm long, white woolly beneath, more or less hairless above. Head of bracts 3-10cm across, off-white.

L. alpinum subsp nivale - is dwarfer and more compact with all leaves woolly on both surfaces

L. palibinianum - Small clump-forming, 30-40cm in height. Leaves lanceolate to narrowly so, grey felted but more or less glabrous at maturity. Heads of bracts up to 6cm in diameter, white woolly above, greenish beneath.

Hi, Berd,

I've only just discovered this great subject...
I'm not a specialist in this field, but I'm fascinated by all the small Leontopodium...  whether from Europe or Asia.

There are also slight differences within L. alpinum ssp. nivale.  Picture 1 shows the form from the Pirin (a little greenish) and picture 2 the especially beautiful and in all parts very hairy form from the Gran Sasso.

Leontopodium himalaianum (from O-Tibet) is not quite as charming as the small Leontopodium shown here so far...  but since the seeds are from almost 5000 meters above sea level and the flowers look a bit "bizarre", it is still interesting for me.

Looks very good...  apparently this beautiful Leontopodium feels very comfortable in this hanging pot.  Hopefully you can harvest the seeds...👍
