I would really appreciate a comment from people with more experience and sharper eyes than mine. Personally I am hoping that it is a fruit from davidia involucrata hat has germinated peacefully hidden away in a large hosta. However, as I understand it, these fruits take one or two years to germinate, and to my eye it looks too fresh to be that old.
Happy New Year, by the way.

I had a davidia at my old house. It looks like a davidia seed to me. My tree dropped balls like that regularly. Plant it and see.
