Title: Petunia patagonica advice required
Post by: Neil on September 07, 2019, 11:46:27 AM
Just seen some photos of Petunia patagonica, trying to find information about its' suitable for growing outside in the climate we have in the South of England?

I think that might  be  tough even in the  far  south, Neil.  I think Martin Sheader grows it  under  glass - and  he's  nearly  falling in the  Channel!

I join Neil in asking. So under glass... I suspect that this is another candidate for death with me...😉

When one  sees  images  of this plant  in  nature  it  is  quite  breath-taking- such as  these  from Kirsten Anderson : http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8386.msg226371#msg226371 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8386.msg226371#msg226371)
I  believe  it  is  quite  hard to  get  it  to  flower freely  in  cultivation, but it  can be  done - some  lovely  plants  appear  on the  show  benches in the  UK.

Read   how it  is  treated  in  Canada ... https://botanyphoto.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/2009/05/petunia-patagonica/ (https://botanyphoto.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/2009/05/petunia-patagonica/)

Plenty fresh  air seems  key, for a  start!

Thank you Maggi, I only have 300 meters and I to would be in the channel, and there is always a wind blowing living up the top of the cliffs.  There is a photo of one flowering at RHS Harlow Carr https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Petunia_patagonica_-_RHS_Garden_Harlow_Carr_-_North_Yorkshire,_England_-_DSC01459.jpg which I assume is outside.  However, as my climate is very similar to that of Vancouver I think I will give it a go

Also I thank you for the helpful information... Maggi.
It's always amazing how quickly and reliably you have a clue to almost all questions.

Neil... good luck.

Hmm, not  sure about that plant  at Harlow  Carr  being  outside, Neil - much more likely to be  in the  alpine  house.    Good luck with your  trial out of doors - if it  flowers  like  mad  you'll make  all the  folk growing it under glass  for  shows really  jealous!!

First I have to get one, Aberconwy has it in their list so just placed an order, and then I have to keep it alive!

Thank you David, I have just seen your post :-[  I had seen that one it confirms that it should survive outside on the South of Coast of England as we have a similar climate to Vancouver.

Now that I have a plant  ;D  I am going to try and propagate it by taking some cuttings but what is it best media to root the cuttings in?
