They are certainly usually white and my plant from wild-collected seed was pure white but apparently there are plants growing on the road between Joshimath and Auli, in Uttarakhand, India that are white or pinkish. However I suspect most likely explanation is hybridisation with another species/cultivar - where did you get your seed from?

I was just about to suggest hybridisation, but you beat me to  it, Gail.  I have several plants of P. emodii in the garden; some have pink flowers, others white. They came from seeds from a very good plantsman, and I am sure he would have grown the pure species, but he also had other paeonies in his garden, so hybrids are possible. Bernd, unless your seed was wild collected, you can't be sure of getting a pure species. I can't show you any pics yet, you are way ahead of us here in Scotland!

Hybridisation is also my suggestion. It happens so easily when peonies are grown in garden.
I don't have P.emodi, and sowed seeds from seed ex 2018. Three seedlings came up this spring, and by the look of them they are hybrids. One has P.veitchii-look and two P.emodi-look, but I hope they will still become nice garden plants for me. :)

when getting older, flower turns to white.
(i also have a "true" emodii. There, the flowers are white at beginning)
Greetings
Bernd
