Title: Aroids (the family Araceae) 2019
Post by: fermi de Sousa on April 05, 2019, 05:07:40 AM
The gnomes have appeared in the rock garden again - a couple of weeks later than last year http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=16185.0 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=16185.0)
The Pacific Bulb Society call it Biarum davisii ssp marmariense but The Plantlist still calls it Biarum marmariense
cheers

The leaves of Arum maculatum var. maculatum look like sprinkled with tar - they always fascinate me again.

15 years ago I received this Arum as A. maculatum ´Bacovci´. A visitor told me that an i was lacking in the name of the place where it was found by Dr. Hans Simon in former Yougoslavia. Meanwhile I learnt that Dr. Simon distributed it under the name ´Bakovici´.

Another kind of variegation in Arum maculatum.

there are beautiful these variegated Arum maculatum, Mariette!
do they grow slower than green?

Arum maculatum ´Bakovici´grows like weeds in my garden, but many others gardening on drier or lighter soils lost it or have difficulties to keep it. The one shown yesterday is a last year´s find, so it´s too early to judge whether it may grow well or not.

it's funny, because when I walked in the woods 1 week ago, I was looking among wild arum maculatum, one that would be variegated or different: a kind of hunting to make a nice find ... but no! I did not see anything. ???
I also do 'Hunts' at Ficaria (White, orange, green ...), but nothing more.
on the other hand, one day I saw and harvested a Ranunculus serpens with double flower. I always have it, and made it prosper: I am very proud of it.

In our area the black spotted form of Arum maculatum grows frequently in the woods, and some of them look nicer than others. Forms with yellow variegation are extremely rare, You´d be very lucky if You find one, I suppose.

My plant is rather small, about 35 cm, though able to flower already. Maybe that depends on the selection, this species may grow taller than this, I read.
