Scottish Rock GC rules at Kendal this year - so Forrest Medal awarded to "best in Show"
Frank & Barbara Hoyle win the Forrest medal for best in show with Saxifraga ‘Coolock Kate’ at Kendal @ScottishRockGC @Alpinegardensoc show as part of a stunning 6 pan exhibit
Such fun to win a Forrest Medal in the same week as the anniversary of Forrest's birth is celebrated!

What super growers Frank and Barbara Hoyle are! Just look at the quality of that sixpan entry!

Iris nusariensis x Iris aucheri 'Olof' - this plant was shown by Jim Almond. The cross was first made by Arnis Seisums. You can see the plant some years ago at the first Kendal Show in this show report by Sandy Leven from 2014: files.srgc.net/Showreports/Kendal2014.pdf ( in 2014 the Hoyles won a Farrer medal with a large Cyclamen!)
-
This picture posted by Razvan Chisu on FB shows just how large the potfuls are in the Hoyles' six pan entry!!
[attachimg=1]
Nice to see that great smile from Raz - he isn't around the forum much these days - but he is heavily involved in AGS activities and the Saxifraga Society..... for example, he edits the Sax Society journal and leads many AGS tours. :)

Sandy Leven's report on the Kendal Forrest Medal plant ....

..... sent from an hotel in Gloucester, en route to Devon :-\
Thanks Sandy - hope the weather is better in Devon!!
-
A fantastic day out despite the terrible weather!
One of my favorites, Dionysia Aretioides, a close contender I am sure to the Forrest medal, as part of the 6 pan.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
As well as the fabulous Forrest medal plant, Saxifraga 'coolock kate'
Not sure how the flower is so consistent in colour as that hybrid tends to lose its colour on some of the flowers by the time the plant is covered, remarkable!
[attachimg=3]

The big six pan was indeed a very fine exhibit so here is a set of photos of the six individual plants. Besides winning the Forrest medal with Sax. Coolock Kate the Hoyles had the Ulster group quaich for best Primulaceae with the big Dionysia and of course the AGS medal for the class .

The rest of the six then Don Peace's winning six small pans for the other AGS medal- he also won the Hollett Trophy for most firsts in the open section, Lawrence Peet's Sax longifolia which took the Kirby Cup for best foliage award, the Duncan Lowe award for best plant in a 19cm pot went to John Dixon's Dionysia.

The Ralph Heywood trophy for best shrub went to Alan Furness' Vaccinium retusum-on the left- then the Michael Roberts Trophy
for section 2 won by Frank Dobson, the David Mowle award for best bulbs in section 2 went to Heather Barraclough's Narcissus cordubensis, while Michael Osborn took the Reginald Kay Trophy for section 3.

Also a special award for Assistance in the face of Pouring Rain should go to David Morris who when an exhibitor found he had a flat tyre stepped in and had it changed in just a few minutes.
Well done David.
-
Indeed he did but I had put my camera away by then so failed to record the chivalrous gesture. I'm not sure I managed all the certificates of merit either but Dave Millward had one for his pot of Narcissus obesus Lee Martin form and Peter Hood's Corydalis sewerzowii -on the right in the second photo- also received a certificate.

Thanks for another wonderful report Stan it is almost like I was there at this SRGC/AGS Kendal Show without having to leave Aberdeen and face the long drive through rain and snow.
The windswept then snowy drive north was greatly helped by the exciting news from Twickenham!

You would have done well to keep the car on a clear, dry road in the face of such excitement, Stan! Hope all the celebrating Welsh got home safely too!

I will add some pictures with plant names and exhibitor names just to allow viewers to see plants they may want to look out for at future shows. As already intimated it was a filthy day weather wise, not helped by me being under the weather with a bad head cold and virtually no voice. Never mind sitting in front of the fire later on, large glass of Talisker in hand watching the Calcutta Cup match did make a nice end to the day .
I won't repeat pictures of the Hoyle entry in Class one with all those super plants, when we were judging the class the decision was between the Dionysia and the Saxifrage for the Forrest and the opinion was that the saxifrage was the best anyone had ever seen on the show bench, both for its size but mainly for the evenness of colour right across the cushion so it won.
I will start with some Primula
Primula allionii 'Coolock Snowball' from Ian Kidman (59)
[attachimg=1]
Primula 'Koblesk' from Brian Burrow, a new one this for me, liked it
[attachimg=2]
P. a 'Lacewing by me in 59, is a favourite of mine
[attachimg=3]
Primula 'Blindsee' from Tom Green (57), another nice cultivar
[attachimg=4]
Dionysia lycaena from Jim Watson (54)
[attachimg=5]
-
I see my first post came out jumbled a bit, hope for better luck this time. ( edit by maggi - fixed it for you, George!)
Stella and David Rankin showed an interesting 3 pan of Asiatic primula which were
P. moupinensis ssp barkamensis
[attachimg=1]
P. bullata var bracteata
[attachimg=2]
P. denticulata var cachemiriana
[attachimg=3]
Tecophilaea cyanocrocus from Jim Watson in 76, another of my favourite plants
[attachimg=4]
Ophyris tenthredinifera from John Richards (74), a lovely specimen
[attachimg=5]
-
Still not getting it right but carry on regardless!!
Callianthemum kernerianum from Don Peace in 68...he had a few of these at the show, this one had the best picture from me
[attachimg=1]
Androsace lehmanniana from Geoff Rollinson (62)
[attachimg=2]
Androsace nivalis from Chris Lilley (61)
[attachimg=3]
Saxifraga 'Allendale Bravo' from Clare Oates (53), is another of my favourites but struggle to get it to flower anything like this
[attachimg=4]
The winning Miniature Garden (43) from John and Clare Dower
[attachimg=5]
-
Class 37 is a six pan class 3 in flower and 3 foliage and was won by Chris Lilley, his three flowering plants were
Ipheon sellowianum [attachimg=1]
Draba rosularis [attachimg=2]
Hepatica nobilis var japonica [attachimg=3]
Trillium nivale from Alan Spenceley in 30, had more flowers on it than you see as quite a lot hidden by foliage[attachimg=4]
Trillium rivale also from Alan (3)[attachimg=5]
-
Hepatica japonica 'Gyousei' from Brian and Shelagh Smethurst (18)[attachimg=1]
Saxifraga longifolia won the best foliage Kirby Cup for Lawrence Peet (19)[attachimg=2]
Saxifraga 'Cumulus' from F&B Hoyle, another massive pot (20)[attachimg=3]
Bergenia ciliata 'Patricia Furness' from Mala Janes (28)[attachimg=4]
Crocus veluchensis 'Giant White' from me in 26, not sure re the Giant White bit as can't find a reference to it, had it a long time though[attachimg=5]
-
Narcissus bulbocodium obesus 'Lee Martin' from Dave Millward, a great exhibit [attachimg=1]
Dionysia tapetodes 'Kate' from John Dixon (7) [attachimg=2]
Corydalis sewerzowii from Peter Hood (17) Cert. of Merit[attachimg=3]
Corydalis kusnetzovii from Don Peace (15), of course Don had the most points in the Open Section so winning the Hollett Trophy[attachimg=4]
Iberis pruittii from Tom Green (14)[attachimg=5]
-
Crocus veluchensis 'Giant White' from me in 26, not sure re the Giant White bit as can't find a reference to it, had it a long time though
Interestingly, Janis Ruksans shows another cultivar, this time C. sieberi 'White Giant' - here :

Confusing, isn't it! ;D
-
Thanks Maggi. The web site now wont accept my posts with pictures as they say 'files too large' but doing it the same way so might try again later
-
will try post a few more as its raining outside
In recent years a class for cactus has proved popular and
Mammilaria woodsii shown by Alan Spenceley (84) certainly stood out [attachimg=1]
Alyostera heliosa ssp cajasensis was shown by John Dixon (84)[attachimg=2]
Primula forbesii from Jeannie Jones in 105, not the bests of pics but gives a good idea [attachimg=3]
Primula elatior ssp pallasii was another primula from John Richards (9) [attachimg=4]
Cyclamen coum from Tommy Anderson (62) [attachimg=5]
-
I have not posted any Fritillaria pictures yet so here are a few
Fritillaria carica from Clare Oates (23)[attachimg=1]
Fritillaria tubiformis from me (79)[attachimg=2]
Fritillaria aurea from John Dixon (79) [attachimg=3]
Fritillaria aurea x carica from Don Peace (78)[attachimg=4]
Primula marginata 'Mrs Carter Walmsley' from Nala Janes (58)[attachimg=5]
-
Again not the best of pictures of what was an excellent plant
Vaccimium retusum (McBeath) which won the Ralph Haywood trophy for Alan Furness (32)[attachimg=1]
Arcterica nana from Mala Janes in 31 [attachimg=2]
I had the misfortune to be up against a very fine winning
Primula x meridiana 'Miniera' from Peter Hood (10) [attachimg=3]
Primula 'Ellen Page' from me was second in the class [attachimg=4]
Yet another new cultivar (to me at least) from the Allendale stable was
Saxifraga 'Allendale Beau' shown by Tommy Andersonwas shown by Tom Green [attachimg=5]
-
I made a mistake there Allendale Beau was shown by Tom Green (20)
Saxifraga 'Allendale News' was shown by Tommy Anderson (71)[attachimg=1]
Alan Oatway had another busy day running the show but he still had
Primula 'Netta Dennis' (132) [attachimg=2] and
Primula gracilipes (134) [attachimg=3]
My last picture is one from Class 1 shown by F&B Hoyle and it is of
Primula 'Crusader', again a very fine example[attachimg=4]
-
I would think the Show has to be happy with the standard and quantity of plants on the benches and people were very cheerful throughout the day despite the non stop rain and wind. I think the Plant Sales did well enough, I saw lots of people carrying newly bought plants around so am optimistic the sales tables did well. It is possible that the sections 2 classes onwards could do with a bit more space as some sections were very crowded but rather too many than too few.
We look forward to seeing many exhibitors at Hexham in its new venue last weekend of this month.
-
Just realised that I missed off the following after my posting problems earlier today
Erythronium multiscapoideum from Peter Farkasch (22)[attachimg=1]
Pleione asana 'Red Grouse' from Don Peace (74)[attachimg=2]
Primula renifolia from Geoff Rollinson (29)[attachimg=3]
Primula x meridiana 'Vastoril Braun' from John Richards (87)[attachimg=4]
Narcissus cordubensis from Heather Barraclough (144) the David Mowle Trophy [attachimg=5]

I would think the Show has to be happy with the standard and quantity of plants on the benches and people were very cheerful throughout the day despite the non stop rain and wind. .... It is possible that the sections 2 classes onwards could do with a bit more space as some sections were very crowded but rather too many than too few.
As you say lots of superb plants on the benches in all sections, a wonderfully bright and cheery display on a dismal day.
Always difficult to predict what will happen on the day. In addition to the usual last minute 'switching of classes' due to plants going over (thereby breaking up an intended 3 or 6 pan) we also received a large number of late entries. Whilst this resulted in some classes becoming a little cramped, as you say the more the merrier and it is great to see so many plants on the bench ... perhaps next year we might even entice all the show plants out of the exhibitors cars ;)
We were delighted to welcome some first time exhibitors to the show this year, and I am glad to report each of them exhibited a plant that was award a sticker. Look forward to seeing them at at future shows.
