Title: Allium 2019
Post by: fermi de Sousa on January 14, 2019, 03:35:11 PM
Starting 2019 with the same alliums with which I started the 2018 thread: Allium flavum ssp tauricum.
Originally raised from seed from NARGS Seedex
These two are just a couple of the many shades this subspecies can display.
I'm particularly pleased to see the brownish-orange shade and hope to increase the colour range by sowing seeds of it
cheers

Allium circinatum is the first one each year. The blooming can last 3-4 weeks non stop.

Allium elburzense.

This was grown from AGS SeedEx seed 2009/10-1159 and was sown in December 2009. Now, it might well be poor cultivation on my part, I do tend to forget some seedlings some times, but 10 years to flowering surely............?

Today I saw this particularly nice form of Allium ellisii in the BG Munich. The contrast of the flowers is quite exceptional. I believe most forms of this species do not have such clear colors, with the petals more purplish and the filaments less strongly colored. Unfortunately, the garden has a no-share policy. I wonder whether anyone else has such a nice form and would be willing to share some seed or bulbs  ::)

I believe when Mark McDonough has  shown such plants  he  refers to them as Allium aff. ellisii - for  instance  here :  http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=5766.msg151684#msg151684 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=5766.msg151684#msg151684)

Allium subhirsutum is much smaller, but a graceful charmer, grown from SRGC - seed.

Another mystery!
This allium came into flower this week and I'm pretty sure it's not something I've had before.
Is it Allium roseum? or A.paradoxum?
Any idea?

I haven’t grown it myself, but I remember reading that Allium roseum is sweet-scented, just in case that’s a help?

Whatever it is, it’s beautiful, Fermi!

Are there any Allium experts who could help me identify these two fellows from Smokóvou gorge, a rare outcrop of igneous rock in Northern Greece

The third pic looks like Allium meteoricum.  The plants I grow came from the SRGC seed ex.  This summer, the NARGS speaker tour invited Lefteri Dariotis to come and speak at NARGS chapter meetings.  In his homeland, Greece, he leads botanical tours into the wild (especially mountains) of Greece.  He stayed at my house for a few days, and my plants were in full bloom.  He verified that they were indeed the true species.

Thank you Rick - checking this out I'm sure you are right!
I was with Lefteri when I took the photo. I'm just going through all my pics but didn't check with him as he is in Chile just now.
