Title: Seasonal Giving and Greeting
Post by: Maggi Young on December 14, 2018, 04:51:17 PM
It's that time of year when every newspaper and magazine seems to be  full of  "Gift Ideas"  - I  thought I'd share a few suggestions  here....

First suggestion, of course has to be a gift membership to SRGC - closely followed by using our  Donation buttons to  support or online work!

For music lovers, what about a chance to help protect  timber  felled by storms in an Italian wood reputed to be the source of Stradivarius's  wonderfully rich-toned  wood for his violins, and still used for  quality  musical instruments today.  Hannelore  tells me that at the end of october a storm damaged the forest uprooting four times as much trees as cut normally. The wood has to be saved, but there is not enough money for that job. So they have started a crowdfunding in order to save as much of the precious wood as possible. The link to the action is:

or there is this  "offer" from Kew, to help their  seedbank by "adopting" a seed. Kew  says it has over 36000 seeds in its Millennium Seed Bank - but  you can choose from 38 to adopt to give as a gift ....
https://adoptaseed.kew.org/adopt-a-seed.html (https://adoptaseed.kew.org/adopt-a-seed.html)

I know that this is a time of year when folks like to  think about their next holidays, rather than helping out a charity of some  kind, so this  might hit the spot for some .... I got this message today about  Guided Nature Walks in Sicily ...
"I wondered if a group of your members might be interested in coming on a Spring Guided Walks Week in Sicily in 2019? The spring flowers are amazing.
Please go to www.therealsicily.com/nature-walks/ (http://www.therealsicily.com/nature-walks/) for full details.

The Real Sicily "

There are a lot of options out there!

Quite a few  nurseries provide Gift vouchers ...
for instance .... Binny Plants....

"An ideal Christmas gift for plant lovers. Binny Plants gift vouchers are now available on our website. Choose from three of our different designs and we will pop it in the post to the lucky recipient. https://www.binnyplants.com/gift-voucher/ (https://www.binnyplants.com/gift-voucher/)"

Most organisations, like  SRGC, Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society, to name but two have gift memberships.... see    here  http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/join-renew (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/join-renew)      and here ....https://www.thecaley.org.uk (https://www.thecaley.org.uk)

:) :) :)
I wanted to send some sort of holiday greeting to my friends and colleagues, but it is difficult in today's world to know exactly what to say without offending someone. So I met with my lawyer yesterday, and on his advice I wish to say the following:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non addictive, gender neutral celebration of the Winter solstice holiday practised with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practise religious or secular traditions at all.

I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2019, but not without due respect for the calendar of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that Ireland is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms:

This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/him or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. The wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

All the best.

It's a Fritillaria meleagris pod , Kris. I thought it had a sort of seasonal starry appearance!

Anne... what a fantastic floral symbol for the upcoming fireworks. I like people with such fantasy and the "second glance"...my admiration.
