Home safe after a lovely day at Perth Show, followed by great company and supper with Fred and Alice Hunt and some chums at Invergowrie, on the way home. Had only brief look at my photos, most of which are even fuzzier than usual. I may post some to see if you can actually manageto identify any of the plants from the crazt images I manage to produce!! :-[ ::) :P
-
A few pix for tonight, more after work tomorrow....
First, the Forrest Medal winning plant, a really large and yummy Lewisia tweedyii lemon form.
2) said large and luscious Lewisia and proud grower, yes, you guessed it, it's the Glenrothes Greenfinger again, Cyril Lafong!
3) Now, a frit to test you..... who can see past this fuzzy photo to recognise Fritillaria hermonis amana
Not many of you, I bet :-X :-[
4) here's a slighty better frit pic... F. graeca ssp graeca
5) another fuzzy effort... this is Fritillaria hispanica (dwarf form) and Narcissus watieri, off to the right
I can honestly say that the pix do not do justice to the plants... huge apologies to the exhibitors whose fine plants I have mangled.
-
Hi Maggi,
Looks like another good judges lunch then.....you'll have to get the pics all done before the lunch!
The tweedyi looks a stunner all the same.
-
Oh, John, if only I could blame my incompetence on lunch but, honest injun, I was a sober as ....................a Judge :P I managed to mess most of this up in the morning! :-[ What a twit!
-
A luscious lemon lewisia! You didn't eat it for dessert Maggi? ;D
-
[attach=1]
President Ian Christie asks Maggi if she is fit to use that camera and decides to set her a few tests.
Watched on by Bette Ivey(Hon President) and Elspeth MacIntosh(RBG Edinburgh).
[attach=2]
Maggi taking the first test can she see that plant over there - what plant where?
[attach=3]
Ok can you stand steady on a chair for five minutes without falling off?
[attach=4]
Well she could not see the plant clearly and fell off the chair so she was passed fit to join the rest of the Judges - Carole Bainbridge, Ian Christie, Ian Bainbridge, Bette Ivey, Elspbeth MacIntish and Maggi Young.
-
Maggi are you spewing over the wee plant on the rock?
What are the three plants?
-
Mark, seeing as yesterday was primrose day, (so Jean 'Primrose' Wyllie told me), they are trying to decide which primrose maggi should knit into her next jumper!
-
Mark, really! :o
Anthony..... easy for you to say, as a man wearing a lizard on the back of his shirt!!
So, those three primulas.....
[attach=1]
Primula dryadifolia, P. bracteata, P. maximowiczii
[attach=2]
The Primula dryadifolia, grown and shown in a very attractive and naturalistic fashion by Nick Boss, won the trophy for the Best Asiatic Primula

Before I post a few more of my wibbly wobbly photos, I would like to thank my husband for his kind illustrations of the inner workings of the judicial processes of the SRGC. That's probably the last time either of US are asked to judge at Perth :-[
So, in for a penny, as they say.....
1) two entries in the two pan class of Section 2
2) Three plants, native to one country....American Trilliums shown by Jim and Janet Paterson....who worked all day on the Club Plant Stall, with another exhibitor, Alan Weepers.... nobody gets an easy ride at an SRGC show, that's for sure!
3) There are some odd bods about though... not sure if these three are quite "with it" ? Bill Robinson from Paisley(grower of the Rosulate Viola discussed in the Forum recently) to the left and Ian (Bulb Despot) Young to the right, both falling asleep, it seems, while David (Dr. Rock) Millward is in the middle, keeping watch ;D
4)Three Italian primulas from Margaret and Henry Taylor. From back to front ( with a yellow Corydalis wilsoni and a Dicentra in the background) Primula crucis ?, P. grignensis ?, P. albenensis
5) Six of the seven judges .... I originally had this pic labelled as "5 of 6 judges"..... perhaps President Ian of the Christie kind ( shown at the right hand side.....should have set me an arithmetic test as well, to see if I could calulate my camera settings correctly :-[ :o The other judges are, left to right, Ian Bainbridge, (partly hidden) behind Ian Young, Carole Bainbridge, SRGC Honorary President Bette Ivey, Elspeth Mackintosh of RBGE and our esteemed President.
6) there were several good plants in Section 2, the "beginners" section, which bodes well for the future of our shows....Aciphylla dobsoni
7)In the same class as the A. dobsoni was this Ozothamnus coralloides (formerly Helichrysum coralloides)
8)More Sect. 2 goodies, Sebaea thomasii, a Pleione which won Best Plant in Section 2.... I think it is P. 'Rakata' ??? and a Primula aureata
9) Sect. 2 still.... Primula (labelled Auricula) 'Mojave'
10) As the Judges deliberated in Section 2, Julia was obviously worried that their brains would overheat and contravene the strict instructions posted on the wall of the show hall.....
-
More lovely plants, and great to see the people too. The gentleman in pic no 3 of Ian's post sure carries his future in front of him. :-\ :-X :-[ ??? :o
-
So you have seen some very interesting and splendid plants there, Maggi.
Like this Primula dryadifolia, this must be beautiful.
Before I post a few more of my wibbly wobbly photos
And Maggi....., I would take another chair, when these plant-tables are so high..... ??? ;D 8)

That's retired hospital consultant Glassford Sprunt Lesley.
-
Lesley, that is my dear friend Glassford Sprunt you speak of.
A few more people pics from me.
Cyril Lafong with the Forrest Medal plant.
Cyril with the Jubilee Award plant and the lovely print he would get if he had not already won one at a previous show.
Jean Wyllie with the Birthday Award I could not possible divulge how many she is celebrating (and live) but she is not as old as the SRGC.
-
John Lee and Mike Hopkins
Nick Boss and Roma Fiddes
Rhoma Fiddes, John Lee and Mike Hopkins
Dave Millward feels the need to phone a friend.
-
Is the wee Primula growing in a fissure or a pot set in to stones?
-
Definitely not in a pot Mark. It really did look like a bit of alpine turf.
-
I think secret Cyril came a cropper with the draconian parking rules at the Bell's Sport Centre. ???

I think secret Cyril came a cropper with the draconian parking rules at the Bell's Sport Centre. ???
And he wasn't the only one.... a couple more did too, one with a valid Disabled Parking Permit! :(
-
Lovely Pix Maggi and Ian !
Thanks very much for showing us around in what looks to have been another wonderful and most enjoyable show.
And the Farrer winning yellow L. tweedyi is one hell of a cracker ! Rarely seen such a marvelous plant !
-
I like to see pictures from the Shows. I love to see the beautiful plants and the peoples. It is a virtual visit of a Show.
Thank you Maggi and Ian.
-
Ummm Forrest do you mean Luc?
-
Yes, the AGS shows, which we are more than happy to publicise, award a Farrer Medal, while the SRGC shows award a Forrest Medal! 8)
Franz, there will be more pictures as time allows us to post them.
-
more pictures as time allows us to post them.
More time!? Eat one less bar of chocolate/slice of coffee cake .... and edit a few photos. That said I must edit mine from today. Just in cos the midgrs are biting hard.
-
Ummm Forrest do you mean Luc?
Oops... sorry about that Carol ! slip of the finger... ;D
-
Ian I really do apologise then, to you and to GS of course. Such an exhalted person but with luck, if he's not read these pages, he'll never know. Besides, I can hardly speak can I? ::) :-[ CL's future in that wonderful Lewisia shot, could be said to be in the same place. :)
-
I shouldn't worry, Lesley, Glassford may be exalted but he is not without wit, thank goodness 8)
So, some more photos.....need to check first what is already here :-\

2) Lucky this photo of Barry and Cathy Caudwell, busy collating the show results, IS fuzzy, because Barry is poking his tongue out at me!

4) Carole M and Brian W.

What is the yellow flag?
-
seeing Anton reminds me I should have given him an article on hardy Geraniums. I suppose I'm now too late?
-
A Scottish Lion Rampant is the yellow flag, Mark... the hall seems very proudly Scottish... the flags are always there!
For an editor, there is always the next issue, Mark. I should get your article off to Anton sharpish!!
-
The Lion Rampant Mark. It is the Royal Standard of Scotland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_Rampant
-
I've never seen Cypripedium froschii that colour before? http://www.cypripedium.de/forum/messages/131.html
-
Well, I think it was labelled Cypripedium froschii Anthony ::) I'll try to check it.
-
Maggi, it was definitely labelled froschii, and I seem to think there are variations in colour, but the shape of the flower was too perfect.

9) This was a Paraquilegia with lots of flowers , but the whole thing was just too drawn and floppy :'(

4 What a a delight to see these two folk after several years' absence... David Howat and his daughter Pamela.... David used to be the Perth Show Secretay. Pamela was a great help to him then and used to exhibit in the Junior section. It was really good to meet them again.
Another pair of faces I was delighted to see were John and Christine Lawson (now living in Kincraig, about a mile or so as the crow flies from Inshriach!).... many of you (most??!!) will know John from his many many years at Jack Drake's Nursery at Inshriach, by Aviemore.... John worked with Jack and took over the nursery from him when he retired. John shocked me by mentioning that it is ten years now since THEY retired... cannot believe it has been so long.... sorry no pic of this charming couple... i was too busy chatting and Ian was at lunch :-[

-
Maggi thank you soooo much for all these pictures.
It was almost like being there.
Beautiful!
-
Thank you, Luit, it is my pleasure.
I have just got this note from Alan Gardner, about the plant I have been calling Cypripedium froschii..... Alan says " I have been reading the the blog on the Rock Garden site about last Saturdays Perth Show. All the pictures show a yellow Cypripedium shown by Cyril Lafong which was labelled ( wrongly ) Cyp. Fasciolatum. Having spoken to Cyril during the show, we agreed it was definately a hybrid.
I showed a smaller Cyp. froschii which was beside Cyril's which only had one very large plum coloured flower and beside that a very small Ophrys."
Thanks to Alan for this clarification, I do now recall the single flowered Cyp. and the delightful little Ophrys though we do't seem to have any photos, sorry.
-
Thank you Maggy for the chance to enjoy the beauty
-
Alan corrected me regarding the cypripedium. His was froschii, which was next to Cyril's. Lukas Hunziker thinks it could be Cypripedium 'Ursel' [a cross between fasciolatum and henryi]? He describes it as "a vigorous multiflowered (2-3 flowers a stem) Hybrid".
Here's a pic of Cypripedium 'Ursel' http://www.w-frosch.de/Cypris/Hybriden/hybrid_e.htm
-
Caption for pic of Cyril Lafong at prize giving. "Ahhh, they've bumped my cheque up to 1000. That's nice."
Nice too for me, to see a very good little Haastia. Pity its owner didn't clean the label though.
A great show Maggi and Ian, with many thanks for all this extra work, along with your judging duties. We DOOOO appreciate it. :D
