Title: RHS February London Show No More
Post by: Ding Dong on August 03, 2018, 06:01:10 PM
Found this buried on the RHS website - looks like the nail is in the coffin of all the London Shows now

Seems the cost of the London Shows worked out at over £33 per visitor, which is hardly sustainable.

I've read that while entry costs to the new shows at the RHS gardens will be free for RHS members, the cost for non-members will be only £5, which isn't too bad and  may encourage more visitors.

I can quite see that staging a display at a London show is a real nightmare  and  hard to justify the costs. Sad for those who always enjoyed attending, of course.

Last London Show :
"For 2019, the RHS will put on one major show in the London Lindley and Lawrence Halls. The RHS London Spring Launch Show in April 2019 (8th- 10th) 2019, will launch the RHS Shows season and support Britain’s nurseries to promote a wider range of plants.

The event will incorporate the spectacular Orchid Show, the display and selling of spring bulbs and plants, and will have a focus on house plants and container gardening.  There will also be expert plantsmen and grower talks, as well as designers giving a preview of what’s coming in the show season ahead. "

Mmm, well I don’t know how much the ‘hanging snowdrop installation’ cost them at this year’s show, but if they stopped all this fancy stuff and just got to what people really want to see, ie plants for sale, that would save them a lot of money. Also they still own the Lindley Hall, could they not just use that Hall?
It does cost a lot for a Nursery to show in London, but at least there are loads of different hotel options close by - am not sure about Hyde Hall.
Most people that came to the shows in London came on public transport, but now many more will have to drive there

If the RHS give any  thought to how the timing and  venues for show really impact nurseries attending, I'd be very surprised.
Like too many other charitable organisations these days, it seems only interested in making money as a business.

Have to echo Maggi's comments. The RHS mission is focused on increasing membership and it's bottom line with the needs of its original supporters relegated to a very low level.

Agreed Maggs! The standard of market analysis and marketing generally is very poor. Nobody ever left Bain or McKinsey and said 'I am going into Horticulture'!

60 years ago the subscription (minimum 2 guineas) was about the same as now, but the membership benefits were hugely greater to those who lived in London. Free admission to fortnightly flower shows and a free untimed ticket to Chelsea!
More importantly the RHS shows were about horticulture, the growing of plants. Most show gardens these days are unrealistic, no more than flower arranging, in a months time that planting would look dreadful. And the sundries stands are about living outside, sitting comfortably, decor, cooking.

But I immediately thought of Tom Mitchell who went from banking to horticulture.  https://www.hortweek.com/-job-tom-mitchell-owner-evolution-plants/ornamentals/article/1220941 (https://www.hortweek.com/-job-tom-mitchell-owner-evolution-plants/ornamentals/article/1220941)

Odd line of thought as neither Bain or McKinsey are banks!

you don't get another £10K a year on your salary - year on year for nothing ::)
