Hi everyone!
In my trip to Northern Caucasus I found some Galanthus species. I would be thankful for their identification.
#1. Probably G. platyphyllus. It’s really big and strong. Leaves are up to 50-60 mm wide.

sorry for being short earlier. I was almost caught online. At first I though G. krasnovii but your ?platyphyllus doesnt have the pointed nose of krasnovii. Looking at The Genus galanthus Davies illustration shows krasnovii with an inner mark that can be two marks or joined while platyphyllus has a fuller mark and a rounded nose.
-
Davis says
the anthers of platyphyllus are not pointed
the bulb is large and long
the apex of the inner petal is blunt
he says the leaves of krasnovii anf platyphyllus are the same. The anther of krasnovii is pointed
Do you have any close up photos of the flowers?
-
My idea :
thats not platyphyllus -I think the first pics are all G. woronowii
I can not confirm from my plants that the leaves of krasnovii and platyphyllus are the same ....but krasnovii is much earlier so the leaves are now very long .....
-
In the first pics the apical notch is virtually absent which is a characteristic of platyphyllus.
-
Anthony :
For a definitiv ID I would like to have more informations about the location ....Northern Caucasus is not really precise !
Also it was interesting to know the altitude ....
and last CU of the flowers ....
I have seen really big G. woronowii from Georgia with similar flowers !
A really importent point is the flowering time .....and the pics from Olga are made a bit too early for G. platyphyllus ( they flowering in Georgia in end of May ) !!!
-
Thanks all!
Hans,
Flowering time is NOW. Remember it depends on altitude. We found this Galanthus (#1) at 700-900 m. It bloomed the same time with #2. And spring came very early this year.
Place is near Sochi, at Krasnaya Poliana. It is near Abkhazian border.
If #1 is woronowii what could be others? I thought one of them is woronowii.
So I have to find Galanthus monograph and visit our botanic garden library…
-
Olga ,
Thank you for your informations - now it is clear a little moore !
Shure - the flowering time is depending from the altitude .
My congratulation - it seems you have found the typ locality of Galanthus woronowii -it is descriptet in Davis ( The Genus Galanthus ) on page 169 : ....and was received by Steup in 1928 from Sochi , Krasnaya - Polyana ,iv 1934 ( holotype LE ) .....
I grow in my collection also G. woronowii from this area : Dagomys + Kawkaske .
G. platyphyllus is descriptet for higher altitudes ,at 2400 -2600 m ,sometimetime at lower between 1200 -2000m .
I hope this will help you with the ID .
Hans

Yes, we found main G. woronowii location. See images of Galanthus #3.

But the first one differs by very big size, blunt and 2-pointed inner petals. It’s bulb differs to. It is bigger and longer. This Galanthus population was small. After consultation with our botanists I can say it is G. platyphyllus at the edge of it’s location. May be larger group grows at higher altitude where was snow.
Mark
Thanks. G. krasnovii grows only in Adzharia. It’s too far. :)
Anthony, you were right. :)
Oh, Galanthuses are so difficult for identification… And there are so many kinds of them at Caucasus…

Olga :
