I had already started a topic with the same name, minus the comma.  But I might as well repeat my earlier post:

I'm told that the HPS Snowdrop Study Day and AGM will be on Sunday 10th February 2019 and the venue will be in Somerset.  That will presumably place it on the day after the Shaftesbury Snowdrop Study Day, although I don't think that event date has been formally announced yet.

The AGS Snowdrop Day will be held on Saturday 2nd February, 2019.  The venue is the same as for the last few years, Lilleshall National Conferencing Centre near Newport in Shropshire.  Speakers will be Richard Hobbs, Jim Almond and our own regular contributor, Anne Wright.  AGS members can book now but non-members have to wait until 31st October.  I have attached a copy of the flyer, sorry about the poor scan quality.   [attachimg=1]

We invite nurseries and hobby-gardeners to take part in this Exposition with flowering Exemplars and also sellers of springflower-plants!

The Hardy Plant Society have now sent details of their "Galanthus Group AGM and Study Day".  This will be held on Sunday 10th February in Langport, Somerset so will be convenient for anyone who has attended the Shaftesbury event on the previous day.  Speakers will be Alan Street  and Michael Dreisvogt.  In the afternoon there is a visit to Avon Bulbs and in order to get there you will visit the car park of East Lambrook Manor so there should be time to look round the garden that belonged to Margery Fish.

NEWS: extension to snowdrop celebrations in Altamont Gardens in 2019 to cover the full month of February.
.........The OPW in association with the Carlow Garden Trail and Carlow Tourism is delighted to announce an extension to snowdrop celebrations in Altamont Gardens in 2019 to cover the full month of February.
This move is in response to the great success of the initiative over recent years and gives visitors the opportunity to view the extensive collection of snowdrops over the entire month and beyond the traditional one week period, which was in place heretofore.
Guided tours of the extensive collection in the main gardens will be facilitated by Paul Cutler, Head Gardener each Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout February at 2 p.m. This is a great opportunity to view this unique collection, first started by Corona North, and now amongst the largest in Ireland, with over 100 named varieties. The daily guided tour is very reasonably priced at €3 per person and Paul Cutler is deeply knowledgeable on all matters snowdrop related. The gardens are open with free admission from 9 a.m. - 4.30 p.m. for general viewing. The Old Yard Café at the Walled Garden is also open for hot drinks and homemade cakes throughout the month.
Robert Miller of Altamont Plant Sales will lead a tour around the Walled Garden at Altamont and Altamont Plant Sales each Saturday at 2 p.m. Free admission.

The annual snowdrop gala organised by Robert Miller of Altamont Plant Sales and Hester Forde of Coosheen Gardens takes place on Saturday, February 2nd This event showcases the best in snowdrops and other early flowering spring plants with talks by prominent experts in horticulture and gives the gardening world the opportunity to come out of winter hibernation. Speakers this year include Ian Christie from Christies Nursery in Scotland and Ian Young, well known plants man and lecturer, also from Scotland. Interesting, informative talks from both are guaranteed. Following lunch, the afternoon programme includes a guided tour of Altamont Gardens by Head Gardener Paul Cutler, while snowdrops and other spring plants from Avon Bulbs, Christies Specialist Nursery, Ashwood , Harvingtons and Coosheen Plants are available from Altamont Plant Sales. Pre-booking for the Snowdrop Gala is essential at sales@altamontplants.com or hesterforde@gmail.com

To commemorate 20 years since the passing of Corona North, former owner of Altamont Gardens and highly regarded plants person, an evening of talks will be held on February 1st 2018 in Ballykealy Manor Hotel. The evening will feature talks by Paul Cutler Head Gardener at Altamont Gardens and Assumpta Broomfield renowned and much admired Irish gardener and galantophile.

I visited the snowdrop event at the Kalmthout Arboretum a few years ago, staying in Antwerp and travelling there by train.  I had a good time there, despite not speaking the language, but if you want to look around the grounds and see the Hamamelis you may need wellington boots or similar; it was pretty wet underfoot when I was there.

The Museum in the Park, Stroud, Gloucestershire, is celebrating the story of the Giant Snowdrop Company which was based at Hyde, very close to Stroud. There is a small exhibition and  a collection of snowdrops associated with the company within the Walled Garden of the Mansion House is being established.
The exhibition runs until the end of March. (No admission charges and there is  free car parking nearby. Closed Mondays.)

From the  Museum news page  (https://museuminthepark.org.uk/news-article/139) :
"As winter begins to lift its heavy blanket from the earth, Snowdrops are often the first sign of Spring – the first indicator of new life beginning in the soil.

From 1st January to 31st March 2019 the Museum in the Park is celebrating the story of the Giant Snowdrop Company – a business based in Hyde, near Stroud, from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s.

There will be a small display in the museum’s reception area telling the story of this local company whose importance is nationally recognised as having laid the foundations for the current popularity and availability of snowdrops.  By collecting, propagating and offering bulbs for sale by mail order Brigadier and Mrs Mathias with Herbert Ransom made available to a wide group of ordinary gardeners what had previously been accessible only to a small group of dedicated Galanthophiles. We will be able to share some of their catalogues with information from the then national experts about the leading varieties sold; letters from key people and collectors of the time, as well as medals won at Royal Horticultural Society shows.

In addition, in the Walled Garden behind the museum we have a collection of snowdrop varieties connected with the Giant Snowdrop Company, from the scented Galanthus S. Arnott – the original giant snowdrop – to snowdrops collectively  known as the ‘Hyde Four’ named after family members as well as many other notable varieties.

You can also join us on 28th February at 2pm for a talk by Jane Kilpatrick and Jennifer Harmer–the authors of the 2018 book ‘The Galanthophiles – 160 years of Snowdrop Devotees’ – booking essential (cost £5), call 01453 763394.

The Giant Snowdrop Company and the Galanthophiles of Gloucestershire runs from 1st January to Sunday 31st March 2019.

Notes: This exhibition would not have been possible without the generous support of the following people: Quentin Mathias, Jane Kilpatrick, Jennifer Harmer, Sally Ann Berryman (nee Ransom), Alan Ransom, Ann Taylor and Caroline Dicker. "

Oh dear, Roger Harvey and Ben Potterton (with Joe Sharman) are once again going head-to-head with rival events on the same day, at much the same time and in much the same part of the country.  It's a re-run of last year's clash, unfortunately.

To me it just looks like a totally different show.  And unfortunately it also clashes with probably the busiest weekend of the English "Snowdrop Season" with the Shaftesbury Snowdrop Day taking place on the 9th followed by at least two other snowdrop events on 10th February.

The Nettetaler Schneeglöckchentage will continue in Knechtsteden 16th and 17th February 2019.

The Nettetaler Schneeglöckchentage is oldest event of this kind in Germany. The event, which was founded by Marlu and Günter Waldorf in the district of Nettetaler Oirlich, has led many enthusiasts of these first messengers of spring to the Lower Rhine every year since 2006. From far and near, the "Galanthophiles" made a pilgrimage to see the offer of snowdrop growers from all over Europe and to visit the extensive collection of varieties in the garden of the Waldorfs.

After the death of Günter Waldorf, the event was relocated by his wife and several colleagues for a few years to nearby Hinsbeck, where a continuation was no longer possible for organizational reasons. So now the event will take place  at
Knechtsteden, where all the previous  sellers and so on will appear. There will be an emphasis on galanthus, but also  leucojum, hepatica and other  Winter/ early Spring flowers.

I very much enjoyed meeting people on Saturday at Earsham, there were some wonderful new varieties on sale from Joe Sharman, Gert Jan van der Kolk and Ramon (of Green Tear fame) as well as the first time of offering for sale of some of the snowdrops from Johan Mens (I was delighted to get the original 'Belles Etoiles' rather than 'Belles Etoiles group' as well as 'Langue Wapper' and a couple of the extraordinary scharlockii spiders).  For those that travelled from Wales, Nottingham and other far flung places Johan gave an excellent talk on the Belgian scharlockii populations and variation in Leucojum and, of course, as has been mentioned before it was not only free but very well attended as we were in a larger room than last year and it was full to bursting.  Of course for those that travelled a great distance they had the added bonus of travelling just 32 miles to the sale at Harvey's if they had not spent up!

The Luisenpark Snowdrop Days at Mannheim are  becoming a fixture in the diary of Galanthophiles.

Anne Repnow announces that the next snowdrops days in the Luisenpark will take place on 23rd  and 24th February 2019!

On Saturday, Joe Sharman will talk about " Galanthus reginae-olgae Autumn blooming snowdrops."

On Sunday, Jürgen Peters will talk about " the world of hepatica" -  He will also bring a small "Hepatica Landscape" that will show the magic of these little jewels.

More info will be available here in due course : https://www.luisenpark.de/ (https://www.luisenpark.de/)
For anyone wondering if a trip to Mannheim is  a good idea -  have a look at this video from last year's event at  Luisenpark - it looks pretty  wonderful to me!
