Just back from another superb AGS Show at Bacup in East Lancashire. Snow greeted exhibitors, judges and nurserymen to this pleasant little town in the high Pennines of northern England and the day proceded to throw rain, hail, snow and sun at show people and visitors alike. The weather conspired to keep visitor numbers lower than in 2007, but didn't discourage those hardy exhibitors who travelled from as far afield as Devon, Glasgow and numerous places in between.
Congratulations and thanks to Carol Kellett and her magnificent team on such a splendid event and it is very pleasing to announce that the Farrer Medal went to popular nursery owners; Keith and Rachel Lever from North Wales with their superb Sebaea thomasii.
I hope you enjoy this range of images from the show....slightly less numerous than usual because I was heavily involved in this our own Group show.
I will end with a caption competition shot that might tempt the wits out there?

-
Over to you Diane....
Too tired, :'(
sorry, my pictures will have to wait until tomorrow.
Looks like a busy day was had by all.... did you manage out for lunch? ???
Only the non-locals managed lunch out as the East Lancastrians were all too busy.
-
I think the Geranium is G. traversale laciniata like I had at the Dublin show
-
Hi Mark,
Brian and Shelagh's geranium had the mouthwateringly long title of......wait for it......
Geranium linearilobum ssp. transversale forma laciniata ARJA-9656
Still a pretty little thing.....
-
and it grows from .... 'bulbs'! BD should have it in his collection

JUDGES CAPTION COMPETITION
I think Lionel is saying 'There's a twenty pound note under this pot' and Ivor's reply 'Yes but there's only one and there's three of us!!!'
-
Ah! Such sweet memories. Now if only they had alpine shows over here. Mind you, you'd have to be up early to exhibit ;D
Congratulations to Carol and her team for all their hard work. And well done Shelagh & Brian......great day out for you both judging from the red stickers etc.
Thoroughly enjoyed the photos but it really made me homesick....the thought of those bacon butties!!!!!!
Great to see all the old faces....and some new ones at Bacup. Couldn't help but notice Clair beavering away....no doubt John was cracking his jokes somewhere.
We think of you all probably a lot more than we write but you are never far from our thoughts. And if you're ever in our neck of the woods.......hey, we'd love to have you stay with us.
Missing you all
Alan & Sherba

Wonderful pictures Cliff of yet another wonderful show ! Thanks for taking us along between the benches !

Cassiope Randle Cooke

Saxifraga Charles Chaplain shown by Tommy Anderson
Pulsatilla vulgaris shown by Dave Charlton (BUT someone else is lurking in the background looking miserable ;D)

-
A few primulas
Primula hirsuta shown by Alan Keay
Primula Lindum Moonlight shown by Brian & Shelagh Smethurst
ditto close up
and a superb Prumula aureata shown by Don Peace
-
Some poor forum members MAY assume (from the way that your posting is worded) that the unfortunate sullen figure in the background is Dave Charlton.....I would not be surprised if he sued!!! :)
-
Androsace (Douglasia) idahoensis x laevigata shown by Lionel Clarkson
I think this is a wonderful plant and I make no apologies for having photographed it previously - is it the same plant Lionel or have you got several? if it's the same, it has lasted remarkedly well.
-
I hadn't realised that Brad Pitt got to many shows.....? :)
Lovely shots Diane.....please keep them coming.
-
The fabulous Jeffersonia dubia alba shown by John Saxton
Corydalis macrocenta shown by Jim Almond
-
Hardly surprising that Dave Charlton would be looking glum if he's got to cart that huge pot home again.... I hope he knows a good physio ::) That is one big pot of pulsatilla... very pretty. Perhaps the other chap is just jealous?
Super primulas... all in good order, like Lindum moonlight, stems stand up well, don't they? .... love your close up of the P. aureata, Diane. 8)
Lionel's Douglasia ( I'm sticking with this name in support of Sandys' plea!) is gorgeous. :)
-
I think the yellow of the Corydalis macrocentra is fab, but I cannot get over that pot of Jeffersonia dubia........it is sublime!
-
And a few frits to round off (all these shown by Don Peace)
Fritillaria amana
ditto close up
ditto but a differently marked form
Fritillaria grandiflora
-
Last few
Fritillaria crassifolia kurdica shown by Don Peace (he had a very good day)
Fritillaria crassifolia kurdica Talysh form shown by Claire Oates
and finally, a lovely pot of
Fritillaria meleagris shown by Mavis Allanson
ditto close
That's it from me for another week, hope to see some of you on my home territory at Midland show next week, either in the flesh or virtually.
-
super frit pix, Diane!
-
It was certainly worth taking that tripod Diane.....you will never develop a BookerTumPod.
-
super frit pix, Diane!
Thanks Maggi, following Cliff's postings last week, I was experimenting with close ups, some seemed to work better than others.
It was certainly worth taking that tripod Diane.....you will never develop a BookerTumPod.
I've quite enough tum of my own, thanks, probably too many puddings ... :P
-
Cliff and Diane, a wonderful selection of pictures to give us the pleasure of the East Lancs show.
Thanks for all your efforts on our behalf.
Lots of luck next week, Diane, hope it's a great show all round! And no bad weather for the travellers! ::)
-
Great shots Diane....loved every one of them. Thanks for "inviting" us to the East Lancs Show

John Saxton's Jeffersonia dubia is SUPERB ! Stunning!
Yes, it was fantastic, but it didn't even win its class, because it was up against the also superb Primula aureata shown in reply #24
Such is the life of an exhibitor ::)
However, it WAS recognised as exceptional and given an Award of Merit
