Now it is the time of wood anemones, which grow here in our parks:
Foto 1: - Anemone nemorosa
Foto 2: - A. nemorosa Westwall, violett
Foto 3: - A. ranunculoides, yellow

Anemone nemorosa with violet backs looks very unusual, Harald-Alex! Till now, I´ve seen only pink or reddish tones.
Yesterday on Öland I was delighted to realise that double forms of Anemone ranunculoides do not only occur on Hiiumaa island.
-
Sorry, I have only two plants.

Some Anemone nemorosa flowering in May.
'Atrocaerulea'
'Vestal'
Red big flowering anemone
'Blue Monstrosa'
My favourite 'Hilda, small flowers but always so many of them and a good doer.
-
Some more, these have extra petals.
'Maret'
'Tups'
'Kassari' this flowered for the first time this year and became immediately a favourite. It has bigger flowers than the others.
Last picture is of A.nemorosa in the wild here.

Re-appearing regularly for the last few years is this Aneone coronaria orginally grown from seed from Goteborg as "ex Iraq".
The first to flower this year is purple

Two forms of Anemone pavonina, the first, a pink, I presume is a cross between a white and a red which flowered in the rock garden and were raised from SRGC Sdx 2008; the second is a red from SRGC Sdx 2009

All three of the above (AA pavonina, heldreichii and coronaria) are in flower now so I wonder if they will cross to reproduce the "St Brigid" or"de Caen" strains of hybrid anemone sold in shops?
Time will tell as seedlings appear each year

fermi - you remind me of the time when we used to regularly see bunches of those anemones in the florist's shops - I'm not aware of seeing them in the last few years. Another fashion passed?
-
Well, I think I've had one question answered - this appears to be a cross between Anemone heldreichii and a red Anemone pavonina!
I wonder if this cross has been done before? Does it need a scientific write up?
The last two pics compare the putative hybrid and Anemone heldreichii when they close for the evening

Anemone heldreichiana Gand. is a synonym of Anemone hortensis L. - according to the Plant List - and the hybrid between that and A. pavonina is known as A. x fulgens J. Gay.
Anemone pavonina Lam. is a synonym of Anemone hortensis L.- according to the Plant List !
You pays your money and you takes your choice!
( Anemone pavoniana Boiss. is something else!)

I like that one Fermi. Is it about the same size as heldreichii or intermediate?

Hi Ashley,
its actually the same size or a touch smaller but that could be because this is its first flowering.
The hybrid is on the left side of this pic

Anemone trifolia and Anemone x lipsiensis have grown mixed with each other. First flowers Anemone x lipsiensis and after it has finished the last Anemone to flower in May is Anemone trifolia. Their leaves are different and also roots are different color.
The pictures are of the same plants the first May 17th and the second May 25th.
