Title: Plants in Troughs
Post by: mark smyth on April 06, 2008, 02:45:49 PM
We often see big flowers out in the garden and in pots so what about plants in our troughs? Fingers crossed Maggi doesnt merge with ...  :)

Daphne 'Fritz Kummert' and a rampaging Veronica
Daphne domenii
Daphne 'Lawrence Crocker'
Dianthus microlepsis 'Rivendell'
Myosotis decumbens - This has seeded without me noticing it had flowers
Paraquilegia - when will it flower?
Perzia lamigera - what does it do?
Ranunculus ficaria 'Bantam's Egg' - opens yellow and fades to yellow and white
Ranunculus ficaria 'Holly' - tiny leaves and a large flower
saxifraga stolitzkae - not very happy and only flowered once

Mark

How big is the trough, or do you have several.

Plants look in fine condition.  Where did you get your daphnes?

Arthur I have 21.
13 full sun
3 full shade except for a few weeks during June when the sun rises high enough above the house
4 full shade except for a couple of hours in the morning from now when the rising sun moves east behind the house
2 almost full shade after mid morning. The sun move across the troughs through the gaps in the fence

Mostly from my favourite alpine nursesry - the Czech Rock Garden Club spring show. Plants cost around 20 or 30p

'Fritz' probably came from Aberconwy. I would like to have remembered where 'Lawrence Crocker' came from so I could get another to grow in a pot for showing

Can you give me some more details please.  Have not visited the Czech Republic and this sounds a good reason for my first visit.

Thanks for the later pic of the myosotis Mark. It looks a real cutie :) And I love the perezia. Had seed of this species a few years ago but it didn't germinate. I suppose the specific name (lanigera) refers to the little woolly bits down in the rosettes?

I grow my Ranunculus montanus 'Molten Gold' outside in one of my limestone troughs. I'm not sure if it should be there but it seem to like it so far.

Can R. crenatus can grow outside? I planted it in a trough tonight. Anyone grow it outside?

Unfortunately the name of this Sax is under the rosettes. I dont remember it flowering last year but this year there are a few buds forming

A tight slightly out of focus shot of M. decumbens

and lastly a fantastic Armeria that has performed this well year after year despite neglect

If it likes it there, leave it there.

I imagine the armeria will be A. juniperifolia (syn. caespitosa) possibly 'Bevan's Variety.'

Ranunculus crenatus is quite hardy here, which I doubt is much warmer than your climate Mark.

R. mont. Molten gold is a real eye catcher and the Armeria seems to like it's crevice !  Beautiful !

The Armeria has long out grown it's crevice but the roots are still between the rock. When I bought it it was maybe 5 or 6 cm across. It is now 16x12

Is'nt that the whole trick of crevice gardening ? I've grown this Armeria a couple of times - it's ok for a couple of years but then I get brown patches...  :'(  the crevice seems to do wonders.

Lovely plants Mark!  That Armeria is so crammed with blooms!  I especially like that small Myosotis.

My alpine pots won't be that flowery until early June but my Kabchia pot is just starting.

Clockwise from 1 O'Clock is Sax. crustata, Dianthus freynii, Sax. Forster's Red, Sax. Hindhead Seedling (in bloom), Sax. Mon Lisa, Sax. Marriana and then a wee Sax. Hindhead Seedling again.

Rudi,
The trough is situated in an east facing position next to the housewall. Protection comes from a protrusion (Vorsprung) which originally was constructed to give some rain shelter to the front door - see attached pic!
Some specimens planted without covering didn't do well - even when growing in tufa.

Did you get some today??

I forgot to say that it isn't only lethargy that stops me making some troughs. My other problem is living and gardening on a steep slope (I keep thinking about having one leg shortened to make me level!!) I have few places that are flat enough to keep them. Yes, I know I could make some concrete pads for them but that's where the lethargy comes in again. ;D

Just for your amusement, and because I have a very practical nature....something to do with trough experiments, failures, the ones your kids made when they were five, the half-broken ones, the list could go on.

This bed which will hold more hardy succulents is half edged with large pieces of limestone---but the other half is edged with all of those above free-form low troughs....
