Title: is it really Corydalis nobilis ?
Post by: Véronique Macrelle on March 02, 2018, 06:53:54 AM
this Corydalis is from a 2-year sowing of the seed exchange list.

it is  flowering in a pot of the greenhouse, and is currently in bud outside in the ground (50+ cm high), with a beautiful foliage that persists all year.
according to various posts, it seems to me that this is not the true Corydalis nobilis ... what is it?

I really like corydalis, (even the so-called invaders like Corydalis lutea, because I like filled gardens) but it's hard to find other species. it[attachimg=1] seems that the true Corydalis nobilis is an easy species?

No, it isn't corydalis nobilis. Corydalis nobilis is clearly not evergreen, is not so fast to flower from seed, is far more "coarse" plant, both in flower and leaves. May be you live in very warm place, but C. nobilis flowers clearly AFTER  C. solida.

Your plant is a delicacy. I'm not an expert at all - may be Corydalis speciosa? While I don't have it, it is a biennial - so it can be both evergreen and be in continuous growth like many biennials, depending on weather. It is also consistent with your 2-years-old seedling being in flower.

I have C. nobilis. It is OK, but large, comparatively little flowers, short flowering time (fades quickly) and the flowers are not really bright yellow. Lots of seeds. Looks best while sprouting when leaves and flower stems form a compressed elegant cluster and olive green in colour. It later fades to ordinary green. Still worth having if you have room for it. Hardy, long lived, tolerant to summer drought (it is dormant by that time).

If you want seeds, no problem. I will send you PM. I have too many seeds and I do not want more plants - I spread them in the neighbourhood. So why not to send to you??

Here some pics of true C. nobilis:

Unfortunately, I cannot find a picture with flowers now.

Here you have a picture of flowers: http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=9274.msg250723#msg250723 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=9274.msg250723#msg250723)

But I have a feeling the beauty of flowers depend on climate - in colder climates they are better. Mine are not as nice as in northern Norway.

thanks Growild,

It seems like that's it. I like it, even better with real name!

it will allow me not to send badly determined seeds to the exchange ... and that everyone continues on the same mistake.

Happy to have helped Véronique. Our plants are only just forming buds. Keep some seed for yourself as it's a biennial. It's suitable for the seed exchange as it's one of the few species that seed stores and does not have to be sown fresh.
