Possibly my last Iris unguicularis of the season. As the plant is due for splitting this year hopefully it will flower again!

Afternoon!
This is my first ever message and Ive got a question. Ive got a range of Juno irises in my small greenhouse and a couple are flowering right now others are just coming into growth.
Should I be giving them extra shelter with the 'big freeze' heading to Scotland? Minus 5 and six expected at night?
All the best
Paul

Wouldn't hurt to take a few precautions in the circumstances, Paul. Especially if the pots are either not plunged at all or only partly so. Layer or two of light fleece over the top of them and some expanded polystyrene sheets fixed immediately under the bench if you can.
Need to get the fleece off during the day if the sun is out though. Cooking is as bad as freezing!
Even if the plants would be alright as they are, it'll mean you sleep better!

The first of the Iris macrosiphon opened today. We'll see who else blooms this year as many (California species) are coming along well.

Iris unguicularis in late March, Evia, Greece.

The first flowering for this seedling. An almost white Iris macrosiphon. We have a broad spectrum of color forms of this species in our garden, from deep inky purple, thru shades of lavender-blue, to almost white.

More flower buds have opened on the various forms of Iris macrosiphon in our garden. This one has pale flowers with lavender-blue veining. I have a number of deep lavender-blue selections, however I see no flower buds on them. Maybe next year. They are extremely nice. All from wild seed.
-
Robert, you have some fascinating variation going on in your Iris macrosiphon! Looking forward to seeing more. I especially like this latest one with the pale veining!
-
Gordon,
The photographs are all of first generation seedlings from wild seed. There is plenty of room for improvement. Many of my California native Iris species were dug and moved fairly recently from the El Dorado county farm and are still settling in here in Sacramento. They have all survived, however I am still uncertain if some will bloom this year. Some are fairly nice; at least I like them (all species).

Iris bucharica flower in my garden since several years and flowers in white-yellow
-
Iris wattii. This survived outside despite the "Beast from the East" a couple of months ago.

I wonder if anyone could ID this Iris please? The plant was given to me around four years ago and this is the first time I have seen it flower. The stems is around 50cm long and is cane-like.

A couple of Dutch Iris in our garden.
The blue one was already here so not sure on the name.
The second I think is 'Apollo' though for some reason it also goes by the name "Angel Wings" in Australia

For those of you who are interested in Pacific Coast Iris species and hybrids, the Society for Pacific Coast Native Iris has opened their 2018-19 seed exchange for members of the SPCNI. Membership is not expensive, and the exchange provides a great source for some fascinating plants. You can find information on the seed exchange here:
