Title: Julia in New Zealand
Post by: Maggi Young on October 30, 2017, 01:53:01 PM
Julia Corden, SRGC stalwart and  manager of the Explorers' Garden at Pitlochry in Perthshire is a busy soul. As well as all the voluntary work she  does for SRGC and  her "day job" at  PItlochry, she is also  a tour leader  for several lovely  locations around the world.  At the moment she is in New Zealand - not leading a tour this time but on a speaking tour in the South Island - giving talks, among other things, about her work as a tour leader.  You may sense the  involvement of "Jandals", the wonderful Steve Newall, in this enterprise!

Julia  will also be enjoying some holiday time  down south too - though this is hampered somewhat by a  bad knee, which I hope she is taking some care to protect on the mountains.  :-\

Julia has also enjoyed the New Zealand Trillium Event, where as well as meetings the group visited  several  fabulous garden .... I am happy to present a selection of her photos  here.

As  she flew into  Christchurch last week ......
"Flying into Christchurch over the Southern Alps - fantastic flight!
Now a walk in the fresh air!!"

  [attachimg=1]

"Great visit to the International Antarctic Centre, near the airport in Christchurch. Little Blue Penguins and White-tipped Penguins - so much fun!"

Thanks Maggi for putting these super photos up on the Forum. It is wonderful indeed to have Julia with us, a most delightful lady. :) Her first talk at the TW was excellent and so well presented. I was right at the back of the hall and yet heard every single word she said. That's rare! Meeting her next morning and having a good chat was great too and the weather was so hot it demanded we sit in the shade and relax for a time. I'm lucky that I'll be able to hear her twice more, on different subjects.

Maggi thank you so much for posting these pictures.
As you can see the Weather is fantastic. The TW was lovely meeting lots of interesting people and so much fun meeting up with people that I only knew through FB or the Forum. They all made me feel so welcome.
Yes Maggi I am being very careful when out on the mountains and driving - hope you like the road sign 😂😂
The lecture tour has been organised by Steve Newall, Hamish Brown and The New Zealand Alpine Garden Club. A BIG THANK YOU.

Fantastic pictures. For such a meeting I would also freeze with pleasure. I love this Ranunculus. The combination of the yellow blossom with the brown foliage is breathtaking nice. I have some seeds of it in the pot for one year. I give one more season Time to the seeds. Maybe they still, nevertheless, germinate.

Thanks for the nice pictures. With pleasure more of it.

Thank you Maggi for posting my pictures  and to everyone for your nice comments about my pictures.

The lecture tour was fantastic and THANK YOU Steve Newel for organising such an awesome tour.

Next week off to Fiordland with Steve botanising and then a few places on my own before the BIG Party up in the mountains near Hamner  Springs. We are going up to Mt St. Patrick to stay in the mountain Lodge - the aim is to go and see Haastia pulvinaris and Haastia pulvinaris Minor plus the “Pen Wiper”  so exciting

Hello, Julia.

What for wonderful pictures. I envy you and thanks to you that you allow to participate to us up here in it. The garden of Susan and David  is a dream. I still wish you a nice time and am glad about other pictures. Particularly on the Haastia pulvinaris I am curious. It is one of my absolute darling NZ. Structure please so many photos like you is able... except from the root. 😊

Cheers

Congratulations on your new appointment to start soon Julia. Great that you are seeing something of our nurseries too, as well as the touristy things and the mountains. You'll admit we do do quite a good blue sky.  :) :)

I guess that's as close as I'll ever get to seeing Steve on his knees!  ;D

So pleased Julia that you've been able to visit parks and gardens as well as the mountains, and meet some of our alpine gardeners as well as those who take you mountaineering. So often the overseas visitors come and go quickly and we, the rest of us, never get to meet them.

It is worth saying here that the wonderful rock walls and other rock work at Hokonui Alpines has all been done by Louise herself, with no help even from Peter. She is a very clever lady (and strong!) with a wonderful eye for the right angle to lay a rock or chose the exact right spot for a special plant. I have learned a lot from her over the years.

What a pleasure to see all these beautiful places. We still have good memories of the landscape
and the plants we saw during the Southern Alpine Conference 1996. NZ alpine plants are simply
beautiful, but our local climate is not so suitable for them at all.
It is nice to see Steve Newall with his jandals in good health.
Many thanks for this fine report.

Indescribably nicely. So one does not get an opportunity every day. I would solidify before reverence to salt. 😊
I question me like old these gigantic copies are. The rear Haastia is even bigger. Insanity. What is this for a silver plant in the lower edge of the Haastia? If I see what for spectacular things you already everything there have seen and have experienced. You make us up here a lot of joy with your fantastic pictures, dear Julia . And to me particularly.😊

The best greetings to your skilled company and you...

Thomas

Hi Thomas,
I have been so very lucky to travel to NZ and to have perfect weather for nearly 5 weeks.
I am so pleased that you have enjoyed the pictures - THANK YOU Maggi for reposting them for me.
The Haastia I would guess would be a 100 + years old. But it was great to see many of them in many sizes even very new ones with single rosettes. As Ann Cartman said “many new lambs”
As the large ones are called sheep due to the fact from a distance they look like a heard of sheep on the side of a mountain.
Hopefully I will write an article for the IRG on Mt St Patrick - well pictures etc
My Christmas holiday project - fingers crossed Maggi 😮🤗
