Title: Hartside continue success with new generation
Post by: Maggi Young on October 07, 2017, 03:45:38 PM
Members will, I hope, be aware of the  nursery of Neil and Sue Huntley - Hartside - with their  fun strapline "plants with altitude"

As discussions continue  about the "future of specialist  plant societies" - and by extension, nurseries,   it is  good to hear that  for some of these there is an enthusiastic  younger generation coming on to succeed to the  reins .....   in this case,  Neil and Sue's son Stuart, and his fiancee, Caroline, who  were heavily involved in  winning Hartside's  Silver Gilt Medal at the recent Malvern RHS Show!   Mum and Dad Huntley  deservedly proud, as you might imagine!

Set me thinking about other  nurseries with a  continuing family  involvement in a  nursery setting .....  Alasdair Sutherland at Ardfearn, Tim Lever at Aberconwy,  Gavin and Claire McNaughton at MacPlants,  John Foley with his own  set-up ...... Helen Picton ..... how many others can we think of?

(took me three goes to get Ali at Ardfearn's name right!)

It was Potterton and Martin at the Chelsea Flower Shows back in the 1980's. Guess I must have seen Robert then but don't remember him that far back, only his father.

It is good to see that some of the specialist alpine nurseries are in safe hands into the future.

There's a lot going on with the Huntley's of Hartside!  A new baby and a new hip ...... this from Neil...

"Stuart and Caroline have had their second child, Sebastian Peter on 17th Nov. a brother to Lucas Benjamin.
Many SRGC members have known Stuart for many years helping us at shows and more recently over the last few years they have both created the displays at RHS Malvern Spring and Autumn Shows plus Gardening Scotland this year with Lucas helping them, as well as helping us at many other shows, particularly this year when I have had problems with my hip.
My hip replacement operation last week was successful, I am already wandering around and hoping to be fully recovered by the spring where we hope to see our many customers."

Lots of reasons to be cheerful  with arrival of the new baby and  good to hear Neil has a new hip to go with the new Grandchild. Congratulations to all the Huntleys!

Hartside  are  gearing  up  for the  new  Show  Season .... their  first  SRGC event  for  2020 will be  at  the  Victoria  Hall  Dunblane  on 22nd  February  for the  SRGC Early  Bulb Day .....  not  March as  mistakenly  written!!

....from Neil : Hi everyone, our earlier tweet should of course have said the first outings we are making to @ScottishRockGC  event at Dunblane and the @Alpinegardensoc Show at Pershore are February 22nd - not March! Hopefully see some familiar faces.

What is the white fringed flower in the post of September 6, 2018?

I looked in their new catalogue but it isn't shown there.

That's a  Parnassia  of  some  sort- not  sure  which though, Diane.  Perhaps Parnassia palustris  or P. grandiflora

Thanks, Maggi.  They do call it Fringed Grass of Parnassus, but I have never seen one so elaborately fringed.

There  are  some  very fancy  ones, Diane!
Ive just  heard  from Neil Huntley .....

Hi  Maggi, I just noticed that there was a question about the Parnassia photo on one of the posts - it is P. foliosa var foliosa and is actually in the catalogue which is on the website at present - although I am just working on the "New" catalogue and the download will be being replaced soon. The Parnassia is very hardy and a super plant that we grow in one of our raised beds with things like autumn Gentians, Erythroniums etc. We grow several different Parnassia including P. palustris yakusimensis and P. grandiflora, both also very hardy but with much less "fringed" flowers. Many thanks, Neil

Handy  info, I think!
