Title: SRGC Late Bulb Day - Aberdeen 23rd September 2017
Post by: Maggi Young on August 23, 2017, 08:04:49 PM
Next SRGC Event:
SRGC "Late Bulb Day" - Aberdeen 23rd September 2017

This will be held in Ruthrieston West Church Hall, on Broomhill Road,Aberdeen AB10 7LN  which was the previous venue for SRGC shows in Aberdeen.

During the day there will be three talks, listed below, but there will also be a display of plants to admire and talk about.  You are invited to bring along plants to contribute to the display. These do NOT have to be alpines, so if you have any pots of plants that you think people would like to see please bring them along, and the display is not restricted to pot plants, so cut flowers, autumn foliage, fruits and berries etc are all equally welcome. This is not a competitive show, so there will be no points or winners. Rather, the intention is to have exhibits to look at and discuss when not listening to the talks.

The hall will be open from 8am and the first talk is at 10am, so please bring exhibits before 9.30am. Each exhibit should have a card with the name of the plant/s and the exhibitor.

There will be a sales table of seed, plants, corms and bulbs donated by members of the Rock Garden Club.  Rumbling Bridge Nursery, from Kinross, will also have plants for sale.

Soup, sandwiches, cakes, tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available throughout the day.

The Talks

10 - 11am:  Mathew Topsfield will talk about Narcissus in Southern Spain, following in the footsteps of the great Narcissus collector, John Blanchard.

12 – 1pm:  Ian Young will talk about growing Narcissi and other bulbs.

2 -3pm: Dave Millward will talk on autumn bulbs of Southern Turkey and Lebanon.

Entry to the hall costs £2, for which you get free tea/coffee. You can also buy a ticket for each talk for £1, and these also serve as raffle tickets for a prize which will be drawn at the end of each talk.

If you have any questions, please contact the ‘show secretary’ Mike Hopkins, Sunfield, Leschangie, Kemnay, Inverurie AB51 5PP. Tel: 01467 642429. Email: mike.hopkins43@yahoo.co.uk.

Super day in Aberdeen for the SRGC  Late Bulb Day - what superb value - £5 for three talks and all the tea and coffee you can drink. Good turnout   of audience  from  all over  to enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

Plenty enjoying the re-fuelling possibilities of good soups and sandwiches with all sorts of other lovey food too.
Club Plant Stall and  super range of goodies from Rumbling Bridge - great to catch up with so many pals. Sadly I ran out of steam before David Millward's talk this afternoon  and had to retreat home. Dave will just be finishing now, I reckon -  I have no doubt  his talk was as well received as the first two talks had been. Great variety in plants on display. Sandy Leven was snapping away so I imagine his report will give a good flavour of what was a super day.

A few photos from Ian Young and Julia Corden to tease those who couldn't attend!

Crikey - one season to get that?  I do know Thalia is a good  cultivar but  didn't think it  could be that good. Clare's plants were in perfect condition.

Enjoyed a great day in Aberdeen yesterday. That Cyclamen mirabile of Roma's is just magnificent - definitely plant of the day for me! Many thanks to the Aberdeen group for hosting the event - their hard work and warm welcome ensured the event was such a great success. Wonderful food as always too!! Well done to Mike and team.

I was very disappointed to miss your talk, David - but  I learned later that those lucky enough to hear it enjoyed it very much.  Such a nice day to enjoy with so many friends from SRGC and Friends of the Cruickshank Botanic  Gardens.
