Great news on the snowdrop book front!
My AT tells me that Freda Cox is preparing a new edition of her excellent book 'A Gardener's Guide to Snowdrops'.
Hopefully the new edition will be available for the new season, although no firm date yet.
It is bound to contain more of those excellent drawings of each variety, so useful to target identification and many of the new varieties.
One for the list!
-
Freda Cox's new edition is progressing well! She has sent my AT two preliminary drawings of new additions to the snowdrops varieties.
Freda has asked that if you have new varieties that will be launched in the near future, and you want them in the book, please send her an email with photos and a write-up. My AT has her email, so rather than publishing here, if you Message me I will let you have it.
The first is the next beauty from Anne Wright in the Dryad Gold series, Dryad Gold Ribbon! Michael Myers has a photo in his new book. Definitely at the top of the list and a great garden plant like the other Golds..
The second is one from Ruslan, G.p. Alpha Shell which is lovely. This variety has a wonderful texture to the outers and Ru has kindly supplied photos.
Freda manages to capture the essence of each flower in just a few lines which is an amazing talent and it is no surprise that many use this as a target hunting book!
I will keep you posted.

Freda made some beautiful drawings of two snowdrops I originated called 'Green Light' and 'Green Hornet'. They are similar in appearance but she captured the distinctive features of both superbly well. And she did very well to even encounter 'Green Hornet' as this has only been sparsely circulated. To cap it off, she then sold me the drawings as she had these on sale at one or two snowdrop events.
-
Freda Cox has asked for a reminder to everyone that her deadline for new snowdrops to be included in her excellent book is upon us.
If you have any new ones to include you need to let her know asap.
Let me know if you need her email address.

Freda Cox's new edition of her excellent book 'A Gardener's Guide to Snowdrops' is progressing well!
Hopefully it will be published in time for the new season. This edition has over 2000 snowdrops described and includes her wonderful thumbnail paintings of the varieties, so useful for target hunting.
Here are some preliminary paintings that were superseded by 'better' versions for the book.
One of my favourite drops, Hughes Emerald

Next two from Anne Wright, Dryad Artemis

and Dryad Gold Ingot.

I will keep you posted regarding any updates!

A real labour of love from Freda Cox - the road to publication is a long one!

I agree Maggi, the outcome is well worth the effort though. I always see the first edition in the queue at shows as people scan their target lists! ;D ;D

Got my copy today. Very impressing!
I must admit that drawings like these are more useful to learn about the characteristics of each Cultivar then most photographs can achieve.
-
We're finding the new Freda Cox book to be useful - as it says on the cover, it sets out to be a "gardener's guide" and as such it is easy to read and user-friendly. It will be a favourite for many, we reckon.
-
As it was available from Booksetc for just under £30, I finally succumbed to temptation.
-
Has anyone seen the prices being asked for Freda Cox's first edition of 'A Gardener's Guide to Snowdrops'? :o AU$240 (£133) and new for AU$640! (£355!). I can't imagine people paying those prices now with the new edition now available for $50 delivered! I should have sold my first edition to fund the purchase of the new one! Hindsight, hey?

This is usually an old trick of the book sellers who have run out of copies. They price high so they know people won't ask and it keeps them from taking down the entry.
The second Edition is excellent and selling fast, so you need to be quick!
It is particularly popular in Europe I hear! ;D ;D

There's a favourable review of Freda Cox' book in the latest issue of The Rock Garden by Ian Christie.....

I have just read this Margaret, what a super review and a breath of fresh air to get an objective review from a great galanthophile!

A new review from our own Anne Wright in the International Rock Gardener (February 2019 Number 110)!

The article appears in the full journal available on:

A very fair review was also published by our own Paddy Tobin on his own blog here:

After the first book I wonder if we have started to take the drawings for granted? In my opinion Freda Cox has a wonderful ability to capture the essential features of a snowdrop flower in her illustrations; it's such a pity that these cannot be reproduced full-size in the book.
-
I’m not sure who supplied the info for the Australian entries but that’s where I found 3 mistakes :o They probably won’t make any difference to anyone not living here however! ;D
cheers

What were the errors, specifically?
-
What were the errors, specifically?
Hi Matt,
To non-Australians the mistakes I found will be incredibly trifling :) and concern the sellers rather than the drops themselves.
Firstly, Eric Genat is listed as a supplier but he has been dead quite a long time. His son, Peter, does occasionally sell them but concentrates on nerines.
Secondly, Shirley and Jane Tonkin are named as Bryan Tonkin’s daughters but Shirley is actually his widow.
Their Sylvanvale Nursery is given an address in Canada rather than Australia! Her proof reader has let her down!
These errors will not affect any readers not in Australia
cheers

Just heard from Freda Cox, the publishers are delighted with the incredible level of sales!
Freda asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone who bought a copy. The proof of the pudding...
