Watt Russell - My very small garden

We are delighted to have permission to share here an article written by respected SRGC member, Watt Russell, for the Caledonian Gardener, the publication of the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society (http://www.rchs.co.uk) (“The Caley”) about his small but intensively planted and very successful garden.

It is true that most people are not blessed with gardens of considerable acreage and Watt’s article shows just how much is possible in a restricted space in a residential setting. We hope this will be encouraging to anyone beginning a small garden.

In addition to the pleasure Watt and his wife Christine get from their garden, they share the fun with others when they exhibit at shows of the SRGC and Caley – where they experience considerable success and are always happy to chat with members to share their experience.

We are delighted to share here an article written by respected SRGC members, Sue Simpson and George Watt, for the Caledonian Gardener, the publication of the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society (“The Caley”) about their large and very successful garden in Ayrshire. It includes an arboretum, planted by George , and wonderful glasshouses - some which serve as alpine houses for the remarkable range of plants that Sue grows and exhibits at SRGC and AGS shows and some give protection to all many of other plants .... it seems nothing is beyond these two!

Post by: Maggi Young on April 23, 2018, 07:06:48 PM: Watt and Christine Russell are stalwart SRGC supporters - and that could be said of their membership of other garden organisations, too, as evidenced by the article on their garden, shared earlier on this page from The Caley.

A TV crew from the BBC's Beechgrove Garden television programme have been at the Russell's garden in Tranent, near Edinburgh , filming for a programme to be broadcast in May.

Our wonderful reporter, Stan da Prato, a friend of Watt and Christine, tells me that proposed transmission time is 7.30 pm on Thursday May 10th on BBC2 Scotland and Sunday May 13th on network BBC2 ( no time as yet, likely to be in the morning). There is a repeat transmission on BBC Scotland around teatime on Saturday 12th May.

Over the years - and this year the Beechgrove Garden celebrates its 40th anniversary - a great many SRGC members have worked with and had their gardens featured on the programme. I've always said they couldn't do it without "us" !! It'll be great to see the Russell's garden featured - these are two of the Club's nicest folk!

The garden is in an exposed location with 100mph winds. Caroline tackled it by battling storm-force winds, which often blew off her glasses while gardening. Caroline and husband Kevin transformed a derelict plot using stone walls, raised beds, sculptures and the spectacular pond. Plants are staked – including those in the pond – to stop them being washed away by waves in the pond. “The setting’s fantastic, with views over Scapa Flow,” says Caroline. “We used colours to reflect the sea.” This is a great achievement, and the design enhances the fabulous view.

Wonderful piece from Watt and Christine's garden, with Brian Cunningham ( of Scone Palace) asking the questions - well worth trying to see this on the BBC i-player if you can - I'll post a link if and when I find a YouTube link, which is sometimes possible.
A garden full of colour, with barely a square inch of spare space - just lovely - the magnolias and camellias were in bloom so added an extra charm to all the other colour on display.

These show how small a garden it is - and how well stocked!!
