Title: Corydalis 2017
Post by: Cfred72 on February 15, 2017, 05:03:18 PM
In the garden nothing is left in the Corydalis. In the glasshouse, on the other hand, In a week, Corydalis solida 'Beth Evans' unfolded the grains of cover of the pot and opened its first flower.

Beautiful specimens, Steve.
In the garden, Corydalis flexuosa x omeniana 'Craigton Blue'. It never really lost all its leaves in winter. On the other hand, the new foliage is pretty.

My first two Corydalis of the season. Lousy day for photography though, blowing a storming gale and very bright light in the open, so sorry.

Corydalis wendelboii ssp. wendelboii -always my first one to flower and doesn't seem to spread or seed around. I have this one since 2013.
C. malkensis  again doesn't seem to spread or seed around. Maybe I should feed them.

Corydalis malkensis is one of the first over here...

@ David, mine only now shows some seedlings (after their third year on that place in the garden)

I planted  C.malkensis in 2007, and after two years someone ate the bulb and it disappeared  :(. To my delight and surprise in 2012 I found a flowering seedling under a rose bush, and since then have found new seedlings every year, so it takes time and still I would like to see more seedlings.

Hi Leena, I bought 1 bulb some years ago and now I have a little patch of them, looking glorious in today's sunshine:

And a nice pot, don't know what the intention of it was, but there are seedling Corydalis solida everywhere.

First day in the garden for a week after a dull, wet old spell so the first one of these is a little bit past its best.

I had planted some bulbs of Corydalis cava ('mixed') in autumn 2015.
Last year, I had only one small flower on one of the plants.
This year, the plants took a little strength and bloom. I hope this year I will get a few seeds to stuff the corner of plantation bed.

Some Corydalis pictures taken this morning.
1. Corydalis cava
2. Red Corydalis solida. Bought last year from Rumbling Bridge with label 'red and cream seedling'. It is redder than the various 'George Baker' forms in the garden.
3. Corydalis 'Rainer Blue' bought from Potterton a few years ago. It flowers much earlier than my other blue Corydalis and has started really early this year. It does not seem to be widely available. According to the Far Reaches Farm website, it was 'collected by Hinkley in Sichuan and there is speculation that it might be a flexuosa x elata hybrid'.

Hi David
The flowering of your 'Blue Dragon' and 'Blue Heron' are certainly far more advanced than mine. I believe that Devon is a wee bit further south than Stirling!

Like 'Rainer Blue', 'Blue Heron' was collected in Sichuan by Dan Hinkley. It is a gorgeous plant.

Hi Bob,

Both Blue Dragon and Blue Heron are a good month earlier than they were last year. I don't know if you saw it but in Reply 121 on the Corydalis 2016 thread I strung together a little information on blue Corydalis.

An unnamed red one from my garden - still unschatched.
Once I bought several unnamed corms from Janis. Now they are self seeding in the garden.

Hi David
Yes, I saw your post 121 on the Corydalis 2016 thread with info on blue corydalis. Very interesting.

I labelled my picture 'Rainer Blue' which is the name used on the Pottertons website, but it seems likely that it is the 'Rainier Blue' described by Far Reaches Farm and given in your list. I will relabel it.

According to 'Bleeding Hearts, Corydalis and their relatives' by Tebbit, Liden and Zetterlund, 'Blue Dragon' is a synonym for 'Purple' Leaf'. (Both are in your list.)

I recently bought several more blue corydalis from Plant Preference (including elata 'Blue Summit', flexuosa 'Norman's Seedling' and 'Hale Cat')and as different clones of 'Craigton Blue' have been reported to be on sale, I added one to the list so that I can compare it with the 'Craigton Blue' I bought some years ago and has been happily divided several times and spread around the garden.

'Spinners', 'Craigton Blue' and 'Heavenly Blue' all do very well. Lost my first 'China Blue', but am trying again. Cashmeriana is showing through the ground, but no signs of life this year yet with 'Kingfisher'.

I have a thug bought as flexuosa. Does not flower till mid June (dark blue flowers) and grows 3ft high, but stems flop. Has seeded itself around. Cannot find anything in the literature that matches the description.

Corydalis 'Spinners'.

It's been pretty windy here for the last few days and the stems, which have been upright, have taken a bit of a pasting.

A Corydalis that deserves to be more cultivated. Who passes the frontiers of his native land. Which is offered for sale on the plant fairs this year at the castle of Berveelde in Lochristi in Belgium.
It's Corydalis 'Craigton Blue'

Some pictures taken this morning.

1. Group, right to left, of Heavenly Blue and Craigton Blue near front and Spinners behind. Some more Craigton Blue and Spinners in the background. They have merged together. All do very well and easy to divide to produce more plantings.

2. Craigton Purple bought recently at the Perth show.

3. Vigorous plant bought as C. flexuosa - think from the society plant stall at an SRGC show. It is much bushier than my other corydalis - currently 30 inches tall. Have quite a few vigorous seedlings, but they have not yet flowered. Would appreciate advice on its identification.

I think C.  'Craigton Purple' will do well for you, Bob.  It makes quite a substantial plant with  good sized flower heads.  So far only MacPlants and Hartside have been given it to bulk up, so you're in the vanguard of growing it!

Hi
On 2nd June, I posted a picture of a very vigorous bushy blue Corydalis (now 80 cm tall) in my garden that was bought as C. flexuosa and asked if anyone could tell me anything about it.

It has seeded itself around. The seedlings in shady areas are bushy, while the self sown seedlings in open areas have very few basal leaves and quite a few long red stems, much thicker than anything that I have seen in the literature or the web and very different from my other corydalis. They have typical flowers that are purple in bud, but become bluer after they open. An example that has self seeded at the edge of the lawn is attached. (Not a site that I would have chosen, but have left it to see how it developed.) With the winds, a few of the stems have flopped to the ground, but then started growing vertically again. Have propped up stems in the picture with a couple of twigs.

The longest stem is 60 cm while others are 45 cm and still growing.

Grateful if anyone can give me any information on this.
Thanks Bob

Hi
I showed a scan of this corydalis (flexuosa??) on 2nd June. It is now past its best, but is still in flower and most of the leaves are still green while most of my others have died back or have yellowed leaves (although quite a few are showing fresh new green growth).

The plant is now 3ft high and there is a metal post and hoop deep within to ensure that it does not flop all over the place. Would really like to know its species and whether other people have such a vigorous blue corydalis. My Spinners and Craigton Blue both make reasonably sized plants and grow and flower well, but they are not nearly as vigorous as this one.

Here are couple of Corydalis  from last May.
In the first picture on the left there is C.marschalliana 'Crimea' and on the right C.bracteata 'Marina', very similar looking plants from a distance but there are small differences. Both plants are tall and grow well for me.
In the second picture is 'Crimea' closer, I love it.
In the third picture there is Corydalis integra.
