First one of the season : Scilla mesopotamica
-
Very pretty. I don't seem to have much luck with flowering my Scilla.
Angie :)
-
Scilla bithynica
Scilla mauritanica, a gift from LucS ;)
Scilla ingridae ssp. taurica
Scilla mesopotamica, a clearer form very compact
-
The season restarts with a new procession of beauties in your house, Yann.
-
I have a lot of trouble telling the "small blue bulbs" apart - that is what they were called some years ago in a trial by the RHS - small blue bulbs seems pretty good to me .... these may be a Scilla - but I have a feeling they may be a Chionadoxa.... or even a Puschkinia ..... I'm beginning to feel my life is too short to worry!

That looks like Scilla mischtschenkoana, Maggi. It is the first to flower with me. Only missed out one s when I typed the name before checking ;D

Scilla ingridiae (syn. S. ingridiae var. taurica, S. siberica subsp. taurica), from JJA Seeds.
Turkey, SE of Kahramanmaraş. Ex a N. Stevens coll.
-
Scilla monanthus from Paul Christian offering in 2015 in open garden, it is hardy in zone5. The wire is agsinst red squirrels, fox squirrels, dog and other digging critters.
-
I don't know about the name but a very nice one!
Funny the Iris poking through the wire mesh in the background :) is it against the squirrels?
-
Can Scilla peruviana live in a well drained garden in Belgium? Would it be better to leave him in a pot in a cold greenhouse?
-
Scilla peruviana survives outside near my house (with basement) foundation in Michigan and survived -30C under snow cover. It is planted in 3-4" of sand over clay and is protected from most winter rain being on the lee side of the house.
-
Colorful fruits of scilla haemorrhoidalis
I never understood the origin of the name but maybe it is due to the puckered look of the fruits

Possibly anti-hemorrhoids virtues ;D

How near to the house?

How near to the house?
I have a cluster of these bulbs Within 30 cm of the block wall.
The plants furthest out do as well as the ones closet to the house.
They all have emerged considerable due to the premature warm weather, but 10F (-12C) is expected for the next few nights with no snow cover, so a fish box with lot of dry leaves will go top
-
In 2014 I bought a Scilla peruviana in full flower and planted it in my garden. I never took special care of it, no shelter, just like all other bulb plants in this bed. It was a plant with one flowering stem.
In 2015 there were only leaves in several tufts, the bulb seemed to have divided.
In 2016 flowers showed in June.

This year we had a winter with temperatures down to -16°C. There was no shelter for the peruviana. That's the actual situation:

In my opinion a dry place in summer is more important than the winter temperatures.

My Scilla siberica are now in full flower. And it seems that white and blue have mixed:

Does anybody known about this?

Scilla bifolia chris favorite emerged and then -20C with windchill-the plant has suffered.
-
Here are two Scilla species -
Scilla (Fessia) greilhuberi survived the recent winter surprisingly and looked much
better than cultivated inside.
Some notes concerning this and other species could be found in a paper by Franz Speta -

My Scilla mauritanica (=Hyacinthoides vicentina) have also leaves above the ground but they are far from flowering. But maybe that was some old pictures ?
-
Not old photo. Inside my greenhouse temperature are over 5ºc during night.

After the snow had smelted three days ago:
-
Scilla madeirensis just starting to bloom.

Arda:
I grow mine in the cool greenhouse at 40-45 F, spends summers in the basement at 65-70 completely dry.
Usually shows a bud around Sept and then it gets a good drink and comes into growth.
-
In the park of our old turfgras - farmhouse Schurigshof in Saxonia -Germany yearly in march flowers thousands of Scilla sibirica. This farm was buildt in 1865 and from this time is the small park also. The blue scillas grow from year to year more blue, we only have to look that the first mowing starts not bevore middle may.
In this park we have found also two red and white old English roses, they smells intensive!

Very nice carpets of blue. :)
Also the white S.rosenii is lovely.
Here are my S.rosenii from last spring. I have two which are slightly different colour, the second one is paler blue than the first one.
-
Very nice pictures Leena. I also like Scilla rosenii.
