Hello. Small walk in the woods near us today. On a piece of dead wood. Is it a mushroom or a lichen?

Hello Fred, it is a mushroom. It looks similar to Ear fungus. Perhaps Chris will know.

Hi Fred and Ian

It's a bracket fungus ... not always an easy group, especially when frosted but possibly Bjerkandera adusta. Usually found on dead broadleaved trees, rarely on conifers.

It is actually a picket of rough wood, leafy essence. Unfortunately, I did not look at the bark, sorry for the imprecision, I know it is often important with mushrooms.
