Title: Name a new snowdrop for Myddelton House Gardens
Post by: Alan_b on January 06, 2017, 08:09:46 AM
Your chance to name a new 4x4 snowdrop to be 'launched' at the Myddleton House Sale later this month.  I found details here: http://www.whtimes.co.uk/what-s-on/days-out/name_a_new_snowdrop_for_myddelton_house_gardens_1_4839006 (http://www.whtimes.co.uk/what-s-on/days-out/name_a_new_snowdrop_for_myddelton_house_gardens_1_4839006) .  The entry form is here: http://visitleevalley.org.uk/en/content/cms/nature/gardens-heritage/myddelton-house-gardens/name-the-snowdrop-competition/ (http://visitleevalley.org.uk/en/content/cms/nature/gardens-heritage/myddelton-house-gardens/name-the-snowdrop-competition/)

My first thought was 'Yeti' after the abominable snowman and the Skoda Yeti 4x4 but it looks as if Gerard Oud has already bagged that name http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=6818.msg192656#msg192656 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=6818.msg192656#msg192656)

I am confused!  The Myddelton site says entries close on December 24th (so why wasn't it taken down) and the newspaper says
Quote
The lucky winner, and his or her chosen name, will then be announced at Myddelton House Gardens’ Annual Ultimate Snowdrop Sale on Saturday, January 28, where the new snowdrop will make its debut, with a limited number available for sale for £80 each.
so I think you may have missed the boat.

Good point, Brian!  Not paying close attention, I had misread the date on the Myddleton site as 24th January.  I think 'December' must be a misprint and it should read 24th January.  The newspaper article states:
Quote
• The Snowdrop Naming Competition is open to all and the closing date is Tuesday, January 24.

All entries will need to be received by 3pm on that date.

Well I got that far and thought 'Oh, too late'.
Typical Press, that's what you get for relying on spell checkers instead of Proof Readers >:(

I have managed to find a working link to the Terms & Conditions https://visitleevalley.org.uk/en/content/cms/nature/gardens-heritage/myddelton-house-gardens/name-the-snowdrop-competition/snowdrop-competition-terms-and/   .  These confirm that the closing date is 24th January so we're not too late.

The initial page does give the 24th January - then the page to submit the name gives the December date - proof -readers of the world rejoice - you are still sorely needed!

Just to let you know that the competition is open until the 24th January. Appropriate wrists have been gently slapped and the page now displays the correct closing date.
Good luck!

Nice picture of it in the DailyTelegraph  today they reckon a £1000 a bulb!  Don't think my pocket money will stretch that far.

It's a 4x4, neither hugely rare nor very sought-after.  If it fetches £1000 I will eat the hat you see me wearing in my photo/avatar.

Just spoken to the Head Gardener at Myddelton, the '£1000 was a misprint, there will be several available but it won't be anywhere near that price!  ::) ::)

From the Ultimate Snowdrop Facebook page just now:

"The winner of the snowdrop naming competition will be announced this Saturday at the Ultimate Snowdrop Sale. Not only will the lucky winner get to name this new cultivar (pictured below) they will also receive one of these beautiful bulbs. There will also be a limited number for sale on the day priced at £80 each.
Money raised at the sale will go towards the continued restoration of the gardens and rock garden here at Myddelton House Gardens."

I thought everything was true in the DT...oops!

Your guess is as good as mine - we may need to wait for APG 86 to clarify matters! Like for the Show Schedules!!

if it was a stable 4x4 Golden Fleece, then £1,000 (+) might be more in the right ball park; £80 certainly seems nearer the mark!

Yes, sadly the days are gone when spending £50 on a very desirable snowdrop seemed extravagant :-\

The winning name was "Market Cross".  This is a reference to a feature of the Myddleton House garden

Quote
The original Enfield Market Cross was erected in 1826, and stood in the market place of Enfield Town until 1904. It was then removed, and destined to be used as builder's rubble, but fortunately the world famous gardener E.A. Bowles salvaged it and re-erected it in his garden.

I found a picture here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/9437621@N05/30072741275/ (https://www.flickr.com/photos/9437621@N05/30072741275/)

A rather good name  it seems - suggested by one John Glover, who wrote on FB :

"I won the competition to name the Myddelton House snowdrop which is now called Galanthus 'Market Cross'. I chose the name because E A Bowles bought the Enfield town Market Cross as a piece of architectural salvage in 1905 and erected it as the centre piece of his rose garden where it still stands. As this unusual snowdrop has four petals that seem to form an arched cross, the name seemed to fit and the judges agreed. I was given one of the snowdrops at Myddelton House today but it is not yet in flower."

Congratulations to John Glover and to all who took part.

I have no doubt there are more in the pipeline so you never know Rick!  It was good to see that John Glover was given one although some people at the sale didn't realise that the announcement was being made.  Nice to catch up with old friends and to meet some new, but a two hour drive there didn't come up with the goods as the pots of the one snowdrop I was interested in were not there!

Brian,

Some of these wish list drops stay on the list much too long...sorry you did not get that one special pot you expected! I know was a lot of fun to see friends old and new. Any photos? Love the sharp elbow shots at this event!

No sorry Rick, The Norfolk Eye does not share the snowdropmania and took himself off for a walk round the nearby Forty Hill estate coming back for a bit of socializing and a relaxed post event catch up in the cage with good friends.  There's always another day....and they are only bulbs ::)

;D ;D Snowdropmania would be a hoot to see for those of us who would enjoy participating at least once in such a spectacle. Brian, I like your country gentleman approach to it, and was there a bacon roll remaining there for you as well?

I have enjoyed connecting names and faces in Ingrid's photos...a fun day.
