Title: Ilex aquifolium 'J. C. van Tol' seeds for swap
Post by: Hans J on December 12, 2016, 03:06:11 PM
In our garden grows since many years a nice plant of  Ilex aquifolium 'J. C. van Tol'
I'm pretty sure with this name because it is the only Ilex cultivar with such rounded leaves ...also this plant has male + female flowers at same time (monoecious )...so I got every years a lot of red berries
The seeds germinate in my borders ...so I'm sure they are fertil

I'm not sure if the seedlings have the same leaves ...and also not if the seedlings are dioecious ...and not monoecious as normal with Ilex  ::)

If anybody is interested for some berries so please write me a PM ( the post charges are 3,70 Euro )

Hans  - I have never seen mention in the literature of 'J.C. van Tol' having male flowers.  Is it possible a male has been grafted on your plant as this is common practice over here?

Here is the note on this cultivar in Fred Galle's book Hollies.

Hillier on the other hand does not mention the sex, only a reliable fruiter.

Hi Hans.

I wrote to an Ilex friend here and this is what he says:

"'J.C. van Tol' is parthenocarpic.  I believe that it is not monoecious at least not on 2 different plants that I grew in Ontario and here."

Do the seeds look good?   Long ago I had an Ilex x meservae 'Blue Angel' and no one else nearby had hollies.  It always set a few fruit but I cannot recal every getting seed.

Hi John ,

thats a intersting answer from your friend !

The seeds must be fertil ...because I find every year young plants in this border ( I have no other Ilex and also not my neighbars )

I have a lot of Ilex trees around here (both wild and garden plants) but none like that!

There is also the apomixis that can be taken into consideration; I don't know if it's been reported in Ilex.

In our garden it is immense.

There are young people all around him. On the other hand his descendants are all like wild Ilex.
