Post by: Cfred72 on December 06, 2016, 07:40:43 PM
Hello,

Would anyone have a picture of Lilium Martagon 'Alcan Old Lace' please?
I can not find anything on this cultivar on the internet.

Thank you

It seems to be a regular on the SRGC Seed Lists (it's even on the current one). But you're right Fred there isn't a lot on Google, apart from seed listings. Perhaps a clue though in 2014 it was on the seed list of the Alpine Garden Club of British Columbia. I know it's a bigggggg country but I wonder if any of our Canadians might know more for you Fred

I put a query on the Yahoo group "Lilium" and got this response from Barbara Eichendorf'  in Saskatchewan.

'Alcan Old Lace' was introduced by a nursery called Alyssa's Garden which was located in Fort St. John, B.C. I don't know if that nursery still exists...I was on their mailing list for quite a few years but haven't received a catalogue from them in several years. I know that they grew mainly Asiatic lilies as well as some martagons. I'm quite sure that 'Alcan Old Lace' was one of their own hybrids, but I don't think it was ever registered. They also had another of their seedlings, a spotted white martagon called 'Alcan Dorothy White' for sale at the same time as 'Alcan Old Lace'  was offered. I have no idea if they introduced any other martagons besides these two.

For what it's worth, this would appear to be the web site of Alyssa's Garden http://www.alyssasgarden.com/ (http://www.alyssasgarden.com/) .  The embedded description (not explicit on the web page) says:
Quote
At Alyssa's Garden you'll find an excellent selection of Asiatics, an exceptional listing of Columbia-Platte lilies, mounds of perennials to choose from, and an added section of nursery stock. Over 1100 varieties of Lilies to choose from.

As an ex Alcan employee maybe I should be growing some. I presume it acquired the name from the Alaska highway, associated with Alcan (now Rio-Tinto Alcan), that passes through Fort St. John.
