I visited a friend yesterday to deliver some plants. He told me he had an orchid for me to take away before he killed it. Well, looks more like an Aloe than an orchid. Any ideas?

Some kind of bromeliad perhaps?
-
Could be? That would be ironic, as the chap grows bromeliads!
-
Yes, it's a kind of bromeliad, not an orchid.
-
I would also say it's a bromelia; I grew some as house plants, unfortunately they don't do well in the dry atmosphere in the winter. Aechmea species have spiny leaves and also Dyckia (probably many others).

I will be interested to see it flower. Here's a pic of some of my friend's bromeliads.

And very beautiful lizards

Thanks. I'll look forward to seeing that flower. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Acanthostachys_strobilacea_02.JPG
