Title: Germination Ourisia coccinea
Post by: ranzania on March 06, 2008, 05:33:59 PM
Hello all,

Who has experience with the sowing of Ourisia coccinea???
Property up to now over the WWW no concrete references over Seed germination (stratification, sowing time etc.) found.
Who can help? - over tips I would be grateful.

Thank you in advance,

Hannes

I found this advice: Ourisia glandulosa , Sow at 18-22ºC (64-71ºF) for 2-4 wks, move to -4 to +4ºC (24-39ºF) for 4-6 wks, move to 5-12ºC (41-53ºF) for germination  from this useful site http://tomclothier.hort.net/
Also a note elswhere that suggested Ourisia was a genus which could have ehanced germination using "smoke" treatment, ""Smoke" contains a butenolide compound produced by certain plants when heated, it speeds up or starts the germination of seeds from many different genera."

Smoke enhancement has been discussed  in this forum, try a search for that...

see here, for example http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1113.msg25790;topicseen#msg25790

Oh, I'm sorry I forgot ..... HELLO, Hannes! Welcome to the Forum posts!

Maggi,

Are you using an on-line or printed source for your germination information. It would be helpful to know about more germination databases.

Carlo, as stated in Reply No. 1, above, I have found this site very handy:                              http://tomclothier.hort.net/

This guy has all sorts of seedy stuff on his site,( including an "index" of sorts to Norman Deno's writings on the subject) ..... not all very detailed, but useful nonetheless.

The Ontario Rock Garden Society (www.onrockgarden.org, I think) also has a database that has proven useful. Look under the "Germination Guide" link at the top right of the home page.

Yes, David, I had missed that one out... we even have a link to it from our link pages!  A site full of interest.

Carlo, I can't get the Ontario site to open meantime.... is the link correct?

Hmm.... got this to open,  http://www.onrockgarden.com   so, it's a .com not a .org !

They have a great programme of talks, too, eh?!!

Thank you for referring to Germination  databases in the WWW, which already admits to me is.
To add I would like still
                     http://www.dawn-comms.co.uk/plants/default.htm
Also DENO does not have particularly for this kind references, it describes only O.macrophylla and O.polyantha.
Whereby O.polyantha would come next, there also in Chile resident.
It would interest me whether already someone has experience in the sowing with this plant!
my unresolved questions:
is one cooling period (stratification) needed, there plant even from higher situations
         (until 1600 m, O.coccinea ssp.elegans even to 2600 m)?
      light needed for germinate?
have gibberellic acid (GA-3) does influence on germinating ?
         (with Deno - O.polyantha not)
Perhaps someone has an answer to it.

Hannes

It seems David's link gives an older version of the Ontario database (updated 2002). If you go to the page http://www.onrockgarden.com/ (http://www.onrockgarden.com/), then click on "Germination Guide" in the top right corner, you get a version updated 2007.

It germinated in 17 days at 55-65F (13-18C).  Very easy, no special treatment.

Hi Gene, good to "see" you around again.
17 days seems obliging enough, eh?

PS  You'll see that we're using a photo of Paige from a group shot taken by you for P's avatar!

Our native Ourisias and also O. microphylla germinate well and quickly on regular seed mix topped with clean grit. I then pot into small pots when they're about .5 of a cm across, and keep cool and damp.
