Title: Practical Projects for the Garden

 Practical Projects for the Garden

Jan Tholhuijsen from the Netherlands is a chap with a great talent for making  things – he turns his hand to all manner of projects to make good homes for his plants. He appreciates that it may be great to have access to and the finances to afford – garden “accessories” like  old stone  drinking troughs to use as planters but also realises that this sort of thing is not an option for many of us. Jan has shared various of his projects with the ‘International Rock Gardener’  (IRG) e-magazine – and some will also feature in ‘The Rock Garden’, the printed  journal of the SRGC.

Jan’s articles are in these issues of the IRG :
August 2015 IRG 68 -  HERE (http://www.srgc.org.uk/logs/logdir/2015Aug261440625534IRG_68.pdf)

July 2016 IRG 79 -  (http://www.srgc.org.uk/logs/logdir/2015Aug261440625534IRG_68.pdf)HERE

October 2016 IRG 82 - (http://www.srgc.org.uk/logs/logdir/2015Aug261440625534IRG_68.pdf)HERE

Jan has generously collected all his descriptions of his various “do-it-yourself” in one place so we may study them all to see which we might care to replicate in our own patch.

His subjects include “how to” instructions, with photos, of course, to make……

- a 3 metre trough

- a trough from a half boiler

- a crevice garden

- half pipe vitrified clay troughs

- a “moraine”

- a planter from a satellite dish

- a lightweight trough, developing Ian Young’s method to a new technique.

- tufa beds

- a saxifrage gutter

- winter plant covers

And doubtless more will be added in time!

You can find them all, titled Garden Downloads, HERE (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B8wSWiwm_WABaDBzaGczZF9MYjg)

Jan has also made videos about his garden and these projects - Jpj Tholhuijsen is his YouTube channel which you can find HERE (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMDAaTWbeQBTu9EfYuZ355g)

Jan Tholhuisjen  is really  good at sharing his  experiences with making things for the garden to keep his plants happy - now he has  turned his attention to  something else helpful for all - Jan   has made a great compilation of Ian Young's trough making articles - "With permission from Ian I have 5 blogs about the fish box troughs collected and put into an e-book. It is very interesting info, to see how to make this type of troughs and see the planted results. You can download the entire report in PDF.
Click on the page, on the bottom right for full screen."

Click here to see  the  e-book : https://issuu.com/jantholhuijsen/docs/the_fish_box_troughs (https://issuu.com/jantholhuijsen/docs/the_fish_box_troughs)

Well done, Jan!  Exactly what is needed for  a wider audience to see all Ian's  trough advice in one easy place!

Jan T. is our  "main man" when it comes to  clever ideas to add to the planting possibilities  in the garden - I saw this, in a Tweet from  gardener/broadcaster Chris Collins, and thought it might appeal to some here....

If you can't spread out - spread up!
