Title: Crocus improvements to the environment !
Post by: Maggi Young on March 06, 2008, 11:38:18 AM
Take a look at this link: it shows how Hubi (Thomas Huber) so famous here for his spectacular Crocus lawn at his home in Neustadt, has been taking his interest in Crocus a stage further by getting involved in a super scheme to beautify his home town with a mass planting of Crocus..... this is part of a greater plan to generally make Neustadt a greener place... and who could argue with that as a great idea for ANY town?
Item in link is in German, of course but you'll get the drift ( if you'll pardon the English Crocus pun!!)

Yes, David: Hubi goes Greener!

The item on the link above comes from the municipal website of Neustadt, so I am thinking that they will not mind if I copy the article here... it is all good publicity for the town, after all  8)
Mehr Grün für Neustadt

[attach=1]

Just for the record: It wasn't me who planted 10.000 corms.
I just gave advice how to do it to the local gardeners  8)

Can we have a translation please?

Courtesy of Google. It lacks something in the automatic translation, but you get the gist I am sure Mark.

In last fall were from urban Bauhof 10,000 crocuses on the lawn in front of the Junker Hansen tower planted. Together with Thomas Huber, who provided expert assistance, supervised Mayor Thomas resentment is the result. In the coming weeks and months, the community something to "more green" in the city. For details, can be found on 15 March 2008 for a workshop in the historic town hall. From 14.00-18.00 hours is the theme "More Green for New Town - a new garden culture for the historic Old Town." In addition to technical presentations is a walk along the Grüngürtels. And community redevelopment agency makers Hesse invite all interested parties to this event.

Beautiful idea Thomas!
One problem: The prices of Crocus bulbs will rise soon
when all cities in Hessen start buying Crocus.  ;D ;D ;D       8)

Luit, I have already decided to buy shares in the big Croucus companies, I will be rich !! ::)

Here is my version of the article, from my rather rusty brain  :-[

"Last autumn the  municipal works dept. planted 10k crocus in the meadow in front of the Junker Hansen spire (church).Together with Thomas  Huber, an expert  who rendered every  assistance in supervising the project, Mayor T. Groll now sees this achievement.( referringto the photo)

In the coming weeks and months the local authority will make considerable further plantings to achieve a feeling of "Greater  Greenery" in the town. Further particulars about this can be found on the 15th March at a workshop in the historic town hall.  Held from two to six o'clock,  the subject tackled will be " More Green space for  Neustadt- a new gardening  ethic for an historic old town" As well as  the lectures is a walkabout through  the designated greenspaces. The  town council and local regeneration agency of the Hesse/Agentur areas invite all interested parties  to this event."

Thanks for the translation Brian and Maggi!

I have just to add some more information about the mentioned "Junker-Hansen-Tower":
It is not a church!
It is the biggest skeleton-framing (is that correct?) defense tower in the world with
a height of 48 meters and 12 meters in diameter. Also to be read in the Guinnes-book!
Please have a look here and on the following links:
http://www.neustadt-hessen.de/stadt1.htm#Stadtbesichtigung
http://studio.tb-photography-art.de/Neustadt/index.htm

You see, Neustadt is not only worth a visit if its crocus lawns are in flower;)

Hubi suggested I post this picture from 2006.
It is from one of the parks here in Örebro.
I had nothing to do with it I am afraid.

Fachwerkrundbau/ skeleton-framing
English version :  "half-timbered"... the type of timber framed construction of the fifteenth century which also featured exposed timber work in the finished building.

Not even by paying your local taxes, Göte ?  ::)

What a super topic this has turned out to be. I didn't realize Thomas, what a beautiful town you live in.
A brilliant idea to mass-plant crocuses in city areas. Wonder if Susan More and I could persuade our local council to do the same. We do have masses of daffodils but the crocuses would extend the season when the city is in bloom.

Yours are stunning Gote, and heaven knows we all pay enough taxes!

Thanks for the translation Maggi, I couldn't work out from the first one, where "resentment" could fit in.

Maggi , congratulations! you did an excellent job translating "Mehr Gruen fuer Neustadt". I can only add to what everyone says :You are sooo clever !
Googles translation was hairraising and hillarious , so I was just about to post my translation ,when you beat me to it.
Yes Herr Huber is certainly a celebrity, and are'nt we fortunate to be his friends ,
      Servus Hubi.

And here the result of "Mehr Grün für Neustadt":
Last weekend I was (finally) able to make some photos between the rainshowers. The plants are very late compared with mine, I think due to late planting in October and they are more in the open ground than mine. And the blue ones are just coming out of the soil - I was very angry when I saw that these are not the ordered dark Whitewell Purple, but the bright Barr's Purple  >:( >:(

Those are just brilliant Thomas. The crocuses look wonderful in that setting. You'll have lots of fun with THAT lawn, in the future. :)

You live in a beautiful town Thomas, those are very fine old (I assume) buildings.  (How old are they?)  Please don't spoil the illusion by telling me there is a modern shopping mall just out of shot.  Sadly this is true of Norwich Castle :(
The crocus look fine, you must be proud!

Thomas,
What are these buildings? It somehow reminds me of a Pfalz I have seen somewhere I believe Goslar.
Your crocuses will probably look better than those here in Örebro. You have more variety. Nice Job

Fermi - it's not a joke:
The Junker-Hansen-Tower was in fact the Tower that inspired the Grimm-Brothers
(living in Marburg, 30km from Neustadt) to the fairy-tale of Rapunzel!
The complete tower has been renovated some years ago. Open for visits only on first
Sunday each month.

The Tower was built in 1480. The building right of the tower is the city-hall, built in
1489 on the remains of an old castle (13 century) and named Dörnberg-Castle after
Junker Hans von Dörnberg, who also built the Junker-Hansen Tower.

And you can calm down, Tony - there is no modern shopping mall near the old town  ;D

I am reminded of the time, many years ago, when the university gardener planted crocus corms in the lawns around the Chemistry-Physics building where I worked.  They duly appeared in spring when the snow melted, but so did the accumulated detritus of the winter.  The maintenance workers sent to rake up the latter raked all the crocus flowers off with it too - with big philistine grins on their faces!  This was never repeated.  A difference in attitudes!
