CAUTION. Due to the increase of slugs and snails I have used a light sprinkling of slug pellets round my runner beans. There are hardly any beans due to being eaten by slugs and snails. The beans are surrounded by a black membrane to prevent birds and frogs eating the slug pellets. I have eaten three servings of beans and am now showing symptoms of Metaldehyde poisoning i.e. slight head-ache, a bloated feeling, increased heart-rate, not being able to sleep, light headed, tired-ness and diorrhoea. I suggest if anyone has treated their products with slug pellets they would better off destroying them. I can,t find anything on the net about how to treat suspected metaldehyde poisoning. Is it a good idea to drink plenty of water or would this then affect other organs?

Ian , even  in cases of such poisoning in dogs and cats the treatment possibilities are many and varied. I would suggest you consult a doctor as soon as possible. In the event you have already felt so many symptoms there is clearly a possibility of  liver or kidney damage.  I hope I'm wrong - but better safe than sorry.

I have spoken to the surgery. The information is that we would have to eat slug pellets for serious problems, needing attendance at the A&E dept. I think I will err on the side of caution and not eat any more beans. Strange these symptoms came on after eating beans which had been treated with slug pellets. I asked at the Chemists about anyone else reporting these symptoms in case there was a bug going round but it seems I am the only one.

I cannot say I am totally surprised that the ingredients of the pellets  could be taken up by the plants and  might so produce symptoms.  One of the reasons I am so suspicious of the use of chemicals by growers and especially near food crops.
Goodness knows  what ailments are induced or worsened by such "take-up" around the world.
