My favourite cyclamen from the show today

One of Ian Robertson's (of course!). This is his C. maritimum CSE 98375. Unusually, for CSE source material, it was grown from collected seed - rather than a collected plant - from Monte Smith, Rhodes. Also awarded four Farrer medals so far, I'm sure it will make an appearance at Loughborough...!

Be a sin for that not to go to Loughborough - it is so lovely!

What a wonderful time we had in Penrith.  Brian and I wanted to offer our thanks to everyone who organised and worked on it. Some excellent talks and great meeting of old friends and making some new ones.

Hurrah for joint ventures.

Seems to have been a great success, Shelagh - makes those of us unable to attend even more envious!
Bob Worsley has kindly allowed me to share some super photos he took of the  events.... first some of Holehird Gardens (http://holehirdgardens.org.uk/), that delightful garden, kept up by a grand team of volunteers, which was visited during the SRGC/Cyclamen Society weekend.

More from Holehird - I think it is easy to see how beautifully this garden is kept by the volunteers of the Lakeland Horticultural Society- they are to be congratulated on their work!

As well as the various talks over the weekend, there was, of course, a Show of the Cyclamen Society - now for some photos of the plants on the benches - again photos by Bob Worsley.  A breath-taking display of cyclamen!

I'm a bit late coming to this party. I had hoped to post some photos on Saturday night, but came down with a fever and had a very disturbed night with no sleep. Luckily I was fine for the second day of lectures. I will post a few pics without duplicating what you've already seen.

The weekend was jointly compèred by Sandy and Vic Aspland. Here is Sandy introducing the first speaker, John Richards (Martyn Denney, CycSoc lurking in the doorway behind Sandy).
The Cyclamen Society had a display about themselves and publications for sale. (SRGC banners and leaflets were there too)
The Cyclamen Soc also had some nice displays of very informative photographs showing Cyclamen in habitats from their CSE expeditions.
Nurseries present were Hartside (Richard Green is talking to Carole Bainbridge) and Rumbling Bridge, along with a member's sales table - as I was flying I was restricted to a single packet of Narcissus bulblets.

Now for the show. Some stunning plants. When I saw Ian R's enormous Cyclamen maritimum I thought to myself "Maggi would call that a 'bosker'".

An overview of a few of the classes:

Classes 4 & 5 C. hederifolium shown for flower and foliage respectively
Class 15 Any Cyclamen species other than Cc. graecum, maritimum or hederifolium shown for foliage
Class 11 Cyclamen mirabile shown for flower

And just a small selection of eyecatchers:

Stunning leaves on a couple of Cyclamen purpurascens
Ditto Cyclamen rohlfsianum
Finally, a curious Cyclamen graecum from Vic Aspland, which ha produced a sport giving rise to a single tuber with differing leaves. This is stable and there are more buds showing the traits of the sport.

Oh yes, the show hall had purple walls! I don't believe they were painted especially in CycSoc colours.

Holehird Gardens was lovely - full of colour, immaculately maintained, well labelled, a diverse array of interesting plants showing the hand of some skilled and knowledgeable gardeners, no less that 4 National Collections of Astilbe, Daboecia, Meconopsis and Polystichum and lots of unusual plants to satisfy anyone, no matter what their gardening style and tastes. All this on volunteer effort and entry by donation only. DO VISIT!

I took lots of photos within the colourful walled garden, which you can see in Bob's photos below.

Haberlea spp/cvs on a slate retaining wall in the walled garden.
An Erodium in the rock garden (unlabelled, a rare occurrence)
Folks viewing the alpine house, including Scottish Rockers Maureen, Anne and Sandy.
The incredible tufa house!
A bed planted up with New Zealand alpine species.

A Davidia involucrata that was in decline and has been pruned to rejuvenate it. Apparently this tree is 100+ years old and the procedure has been done before.
Part of the Polystichum collection.
Part of the Meconopsis collection.
Fours beds were planted up with Gentiana cultivars that will be the subject of a RHS trial starting next year.
Clerodendron bungei

I believe it was some time in the planning, but from my perspective the weekend was a great success. Penrith was a convenient location with good public transport links (my journey was just 4 hours door-to-door), as easy access from the M6 as well as lots of options for accommodation and eating.

The range of speakers and subjects was interesting and informative with spring and autumn travelogues, cultivation advice from both sides of the border, detail from expeditions and a review of artistic representations of Cyclamen over the last 1,500 years.

Above all, it was great to meet up with friends old and new and those who had only been 'met' through the Forum.

Well done and thanks to Sandy, Vic and their teams.

Small question for some time i wonder if some people filmed lectures. That would be super interesting, especially for those who live far away, to post them on youtube or other platform. Now with a smartphone placed on a small tripod it can easily be done.

SRGC are always hopeful of getting permission to do it, Michael - and to have a  volunteer with the equipment etc !
